It started as nothing more than two friends. He lived just two houses down, and one day he called me over to hang out. We sat around, talking, laughing, not watching the clock. By the time the night got quiet, he told me to just stay.

The first time, nothing happened. The second, nothing either. But one night, I woke up in the dark to find him holding me. It was small, almost cautious but everything felt different after that.

From then on, I’d find myself walking those few steps down the street after everyone else had gone to sleep. The air would be still, the houses lit only by the faint glow of porch lights. Inside his room, the world felt smaller, softer. Shadows moved across the wall, our voices fell to whispers, and every truth felt safe there.

It was the first time I’d ever explored that part of myself with another guy and for him too, it was something new. He was the first man I’d ever shared any kind of intimacy with, and the vulnerability of that made the connection feel even deeper.

The “dark” in the song is that space. Not just the absence of light, but the place between us where there was no need for labels, no need to explain. Where lines blurred and walls fell.

In the daylight, he was still himself still guarded, still figuring things out 
but with me, even then, there was a kindness most people never saw. And at night… in the dark… he was the most open, beautiful version of himself. A version I’ll always remember.
