Australian Kia very quickly rose up through the grimy after-hours rave scene of Melbourne to make her mark on the international stage. Now Berlin-based, her unique grasp of rhythm is rooted in a love of bass, IDM and deeper techno though she is adept at exploring a wide range of moods within those worlds. She has done so at places like ADE and our own festival and extends her good taste to the curation of her Animalia imprint and its ambient sub-label Cirrus as well as her own original tracks on Nous'klaer Audio.

In this week's mix, Kia showcases a colourful and kaleidoscopic take on techno which she says was awakened by an early trip to Japan's famously head Labyrinth festival. It's a hi-fidelity feast of supple rhythms, icy synths and deep space ambiance that unfolds in late-night fashion. The melodies are as delicate as silk, the drums rubbery yet punchy. It's high-paced future music that manages to be as delicate and beautiful as it is dynamic.

First up for The Mix is Danny From Miami 🌴

@dannydaze takes us on a trip through Miami dance music history, diving into the irregular rhythms he grew up with and nodding to the new wave of flag-bearers. It also features an in-depth interview, exploring  his journey from childhood DJing to time in prison to rising up as Miami’s favourite figurehead, and the first explanation of the concept behind his long-awaited debut album ‘::BLUE::’.

"With this mix, my intention is to show a side of the IDM world I grew up with, steering away from the misconception that IDM is chaotic kitchen utensil-like sounds. I wanted to show a softer side focused on “danceable IDM” and electro. Music you can still bop your head to. As a youngster, I grew up dancing to non-traditional rhythms coming out of labels like M3rck, Schematic, and Beta Bodega, so I wanted to represent quite a bit of this Miami-infused sound along with some newer acts I’ve been immensely into at the moment," he says.

Mixmag has a long history of publishing mixes, from our legendary cover CDs accompanying the print magazine to our worldwide video streams in The Lab. Last year we celebrated 40 years in the game and The Mix now arrives as a fresh outlet to document DJs and the musical movements they represent, showcasing their sound alongside an in-depth interview. The design pays homage to a previous Mixmag logo from the ealy ’90s, nodding to our heritage while using the square and rectangular building blocks to construct an aesthetic that works cohesively with contemporary design elements and digital motion systems. 

We’ll still be bringing you the Cover Mix, The Lab and occasional sets in other formats, with The Mix is taking the place of our In Session and Impact features, intending to bring an updated look and vision to our flagship weekly DJ profile and sequencing them into one place, without separation. Flying through funk, soul, psychedelia, and enchanting soundtracks, Adam Wiltzie commemorates the 30th anniversary of Stars of the Lid’s debut Music for Nitrous Oxide with a mix mirroring the album’s spaciousness and throbbing rawness. The lurching guitars of Wiltzie’s Windsor For The Derby band pace out a textural abyss, allowing for the hushed, gentle twitches of Loscil’s ‘Sticky’ to slowly expand as frost growing on a windowpane, and the fluid melismatic bansuri of Hariprasaf Chaurasia to unravel throughout much of the mix. Smooth organ glides and lush harmonies later lead to a convergence of dextrous, emotive guitar plucks on vAntonio Pinto**’s cinematically swelling ‘Maradona Childhood’.

"We're trying to show more of who we are." The Belgian brothers unpack their decades-long career and first album in more than seven years.

There are some songs that have become pervasive, nearly universally recognisable features of pop culture. And my guess is that even if you don't know the Belgian duo Soulwax (AKA 2Manydjs) by name, you'll know their biggest hits, like early 2000s indie electronic anthems "E Talking" or "NY Excuse."

In this interview with Resident Advisor editor Gabriel Szatan, the brothers David and Stephen Dewaele talk about their decades-long career and writing their first album in more than seven years, All Systems Are Lying, which they road tested for ages before deciding to put it out. They also unpack bigger thematic arcs in their work and lives: the abiding influence of New Order's Power, Corruption and Lies LP; their creative philosophy ("If it sounds too simple, leave it alone);" and the nature of musical trends and revivals, which have fluctuated intensely since they began performing and releasing records.
