Made using Only the free Crowhill Vaults instrument plugins, and nothing else except effects. For the CrowHill music competition of June ‘24. I used effects to try and sculpt unique sounds from the vaults and used lots of layering as well. The main challenges were getting the  multiple instances to not produce too much room / reverb sound on top of each other and things like that.  A lot of distortion effects and warps like flangers phasers echos delays etc were used. This was mixed with clean instances of the vaults as well for contrast. Also harsh eq profiles on further instances to try and find ways to put missing frequency content into the mix.

This week's Disquiet Junto introduced me to the work of Raymond Scott, beginning with his 3-volume "Soothing Sounds for Baby" and back and forth in time between The Quintette and Looney Tunes and Manhattan Research. I've got a lot of catching up on history to do.

I wanted to do something that was lovely and curious, a dark fairy tale, a sort of lullaby that evoked the clockwork precision of the songs on the Soothing Sounds records. I learned that Scott was the inventor of the sequencer, so I decided to use a hardware sequencer and analog circuits to create an homage. I tried to reflect the ostinato sequences, the wandering key changes, the intricately overlapping patterns, and the stiff improvisation that I heard in Scott's work.

All of the sounds came from a Roland JU-06A, the boutique reissue of the venerable Juno-60 and Juno-160. I also used that unit's 12-step sequencer to create each iteration of the ostinato pattern (through 7 key changes.)

I swear I tried not to use reverb. I swear I swear.

"Baby's First Harmonic Minor" is best enjoyed curled up under a soft blanket, nightlight aglow, with the hall light on and the bedroom door left open just a little bit.

A lullaby reimagined as a drunken sea shanty.

The original song by Ángel L. Martínez ( https://soundcloud.com/user-928003931-57021144/al-mar-mi-piratitaalm )was played through various metal buckets and recorded with contact mics. The recordings were arranged out of sync to create a messy choir of voices. Then I recorded some bursts of prepared guitar played with a violin bow, just to add to the woozy drunk-at-sea feeling.

heaven and earth
still not rent asunder -
morning mist

Genkaibō was a Japanese poet and monk from the Edo period.

Despite my best efforts, I couldn't find more information about him. I came across this poem in The Penguin Book of Haiku, but there's no mention of Genkaibō's life or other works. I also found one of his poems in a 1991 edition of the Frogpond haiku journal. If anyone else has more information on this mysterious haiku poet, please get in touch and I'll update the description.

I collect litter and make small scale sonic sculptures and rudimentary instruments. When I play them I’m thinking of natural rhythms like the wind in the trees or animal movements.
