This is the first time that I cried while composing music.

I recently took an American history course in college, and what I learned there really moved me to compose this piece. 

As an Indonesian, I had just learned that African Americans endured over a century of struggle to gain equal standing as a white person. This piece tells a story about African Americans from a time of slavery and the Civil War, to a century of slaughter, discrimination, and segregation, until finally, they united to fight for freedom in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. 

I have also learned about the struggle of women. Albeit all our achievements to fight for equal rights, we are still striving to have equal rights as men.

The fight for equal rights isn’t over, and we shall not give up. So with this piece, I intend to bring hope to everyone fighting for equal rights.

Rindu (Original)

The Indonesian word “rindu” translates to “longing.”

I was inspired to create this piece because of homesickness.

I first worked on this piece months ago, because I was craving for Sundanese* food, which I used to eat very often, until I came to Davis. Since I am still homesick, I have been listening to an excessive amount of dangdut**, which keeps me close to home. So in this piece, I have incorporated a mix of Sundanese elements and dangdut.

And because I can’t cook Sundanese food, I hope I can give you a little taste of my homeland through my music. 


*Sundanese are an ethnic group in West Java, Indonesia.
**dangdut is an Indonesian music genre.
