When the house which is now home to Rambalkoshe was empty, we only had a hi-fi system, an ipad and a soundcloud account which we used to gather our favorite artists, their albums and mixes. The set Rey&Kjavik played at Burning Man in 2016 was one of them. Fast forward some five years, and both the hi-fi system and the ipad are gone, we no longer use that soundcloud account, and the only thing that has remained with us is @rkjvk, except the set we now have is composed specifically for us. And it’s such a wholesome feeling to realize that you yourself, your little group of friends and folks who believe in ideas are capable of creating a separate set of time units and living inside them.

"homard" project

Rey&Kjavik - "Memorija” for RAMBALKOSHE

Today, we are publishing the penultimate mix of our “homard” project, from an artist whose music has been important for each of us in the various stages of life. A completely different text was supposed to be here, but everything changed when @kasperbjorke said he was thinking of naming the mix “Homage to Homard”.

In around two months, we’ll complete the first part of the project – a celebration of sound that acquired its unique shape thanks to 107 artists. We are grateful to musicians from every corner of the world who believed in what we do and gave a piece of their stories to us. We are glad that we didn’t give up and went through a period that history books will later describe as “disastrous”. And we are beyond honored to have your trust, which is both obliging and humbling. This project will be ready in some two years, when the textual and visual phases are completed too. Until then, cheers and stay tuned for more.

Rambalkoshe is 5 years old. And if we turn all those days into a feeling, it’ll become an interesting hybrid of faith, fear, dreams, happiness, astonishment, unexpectedness and a bunch of other things, good or bad, albeit one that will eventually definitely warm your heart. And if we divide that feeling back into days, we’ll find different emotions in each of those days that no one warned us about and no one had the experience of. Then, if we collect those experiences back into a space, we’ll get Rambalkoshe, this particular contemporary art museum, which existed even before its name came into being. Rambalkoshe is 5 years old, which means that when @masterdaao first came to visit us he wasn’t the artist we know him to be, but now he is one of only a handful of people we could imagine playing on our 5th anniversary and making his set a part of the “homard” project.

You know The Unbearable Lightness of Being? Of course you do. So on the one hand everything is alive and is happening only once and because of that life is unbearably light. On the other hand, unbearable does not mean bad, nor is light necessarily synonymous with bad. Moreover, because our life is unrepeatable, every second of it becomes much more important and beautiful. And the same could go with The Unbearable Lightness of Being where everything that happens throughout life… anyway, you get the gist. This past midsummer, at the invitation of Rambalkoshe and Jägermeister, @denis-kaznacheev played here, and trying to describe in words how beautiful everything was is as pointless as trying to weigh the lightness of your being.

We have several things to say in the description of this set, and first comes the text Niki emailed us: "I'm dedicating this to a good friend of mine and the unconditional love and support we have for each other no matter where we are and what we are going through in life." Next comes an excerpt from a poem by Pablo Neruda we came upon on @nikisadeki's page and found it to be exhilarating: "Let’s try and avoid death in small doses, always reminding oneself that being alive requires an effort by far greater than the simple fact of breathing." And perhaps the fact that today is the International Women's Day and we would hardly be able to choose a better day for publishing this mix.

Niki Sadeki - "Unconditionally" for RAMBALKOSHE

How do we choose artists for the “homard” project? Any method but the standard one will do. We don’t look at the number of their followers on social media, or whether a particular artist is well-known or not, as we do understand how relative everything is. We never focus on the genre the artist has chosen to play in as no such limitations exist for us. When you rule out all these and other standard methods, sudden and unexpected ways of choosing artists are left, which are never the same, and neither is the case with @el-buho. We heard him play at Souq and made up our minds to have him in this project too. Then we met him several days later, and after a half-hour conversation he agreed to become one of the characters on the wall. Only time knows why we are publishing the podcast now, and maybe we too know a bit and Robin does a little more. One thing is certain: the set must be published right now and with this exact title.

Florecer [floɾeˈθeɾ] is a Spanish verb that means to flower, to blossom.

When you write a description text and then delete it and start over several times, it doesn’t mean you don’t know what to write, but rather means you don’t know how to do it - how to describe the connection Rambalkoshe and Milo have together or how to list all the reasons that have kept him from visiting Yerevan all this time. It’s impossible to describe how many times we have turned his music up and done a bunch of crazy staff, having BBQs and playing table games, falling asleep and waking up to the same sounds, looping a mix and arguing over whether we should switch to something else or go one more round, and then arriving at a compromise and playing something else, but sticking with @miloh-fliger after all. We even went as far as to acknowledge that the Russian word “milo” means “nice” and that when we open an event, we should name it “Ochen Milo” (i.e. very nice, “ochen” means “very” in Russian). Long story short, this is one of the few texts we have written before even listening to the podcast, as no matter what we are about to hear, it will become ours.

Milo Häfliger - "Back from space" for RAMBALKOSHE

Imagine a room 7 meters long and 4 meters wide. Once you enter the room, you see Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” - except all the characters are removed - covering the entire seven-meter wall, and in front of the picture you see a table of the same length, behind which stands the artist of the day who is about to turn the room into a music hall. The musical instruments that the artist is going to need that day take up the table, while sound systems that would be enough for several such rooms are placed on both sides of the table. Red lights not only illuminate the painting but also give a reddish hue to the entire room. Can you visualize that? Now imagine people dancing in the spare parts of the room which at first sight can accommodate no more than 20-30 people. Once you imagine that too, go one step further and try to picture a scene where the musician of the day is @tummetott_music, the room is jam-packed with more than 50 people, and it’s 4 in the am - this mix is just a small portion of that day. Tummetott -  "Something Said" for RAMBALKOSHE

Anyone who visits our soundcloud page can find – besides the weird name, obviously – some 60 podcasts by the most diverse musicians, recorded specifically for Rambalkoshe. And only after roaming about the page for some time do they start to realize that the covers on mixes are somehow interconnected. While some just leave it at that, others discover the link below the sets and learn more about the project and the connection between the music and the covers there. A third group, meanwhile, know everything there is to know as they have visited Rambalkoshe and seen the “red room” first hand. 

In fact, even we are unable to understand what’s what, and everything kind of looks like a very long passageway which has to have some ending somewhere but no one knows where exactly. And the only thing that helps us move is the people who believe in us, and the itch that’s pushing us to stand up after falling down and keep going, a feeling whispering in our ears to never stop. @elifmusique is one of those people who, like lanterns, light up the road ahead and behind, so that when in despair, we can always turn back and see how far we’ve gone. Elif - "Work in progress" for RAMBALKOSHE

Have you heard about the six degrees of separation, according to which people are only six social connections away from each other? The theory was developed in 1969 by American psychologists Stanley Milgram and Jeffrey Travers who claimed that every single person on Earth indirectly knows anyone else, this chain of acquaintances consisting of 6 people at most. If Mr. Milgram and Mr. Travers lived in Armenia, their theory would most probably be called one or, at best, two degrees of separation. Think about it: throughout the two years of the existence of our “homard” project we have been communicating with hundreds of artists, and there has usually been a mutual friend involved – somewhere, somehow – making the process of discovering new connections all the more fun. But @joep-mencke’s case was somewhat different. We invited him to join the project, he accepted the offer with no mutual friend putting in a good word, and some time later an Armenian friend of ours living in the Netherlands, who we hadn’t heard from in years, wrote to tell us that Joep has told her that he’s working with Armenia. It was only after a few inquiries that they found out that this girl knows us all very well. So now you can judge for yourselves what this project is all about if not the invisible threads bringing all of us closer together, which you just have to notice or give them some time to reveal themselves.

Joep Mencke - "A journey to a place where you already are" for RAMBALKOSHE

What should we write in the description of @armenmiran’s set? That we had yet to know who Armen was but felt as if we had grown up together? That he is the only artist who has played 10 hours straight in the “homard” room? That we beat our brains out to create the name and brand ID of Armen’s label, and now his cover pictures? That he has always inspired us to believe in what we do? Or that he has rewritten the set several times to finally be able to communicate the essence of Rambalkoshe? In fact, no matter what we say, it is impossible to explain all we have gone through together and everything else we have yet to accomplish.

P.S. miorambalhoom [mɪˈɔrʌmbʌlˈhuːm] is a hybrid word with some Armenian involved — mi(one)+ or(day)+ Rambalkoshe + Hoomidaas Records — which basically means “one day in Rambalkoshe and Hoomidaas Records”. On the other hand, the word “hoom” (հում) means “raw” in Armenian, so everything is not as simple as you could have hoped for.

Miyagi - "Sleeping On Jupiter" for RAMBALKOSHE

Everything started half a year ago when we invited @omemusic to join our “homard” project, and culminated yesterday when he sent the set titled “magia negra” [ˈmahia ˈneɡɾa], which means “black magic”. Also, he wrote to reveal that he made more than 50 field recordings to capture 100% original Mexican sounds, and that the last three songs are exclusive to us, meaning they will only appear here and will never be released. So now, we are leaving the title’s meaning to your imagination—maybe the word “woman” is missing, or maybe the word “black” is redundant—but one thing is certain: there is something magical about all this.

Ōme - "Magia Negra"(live set) for RAMBALKOSHE

There could be an emotional text about how much fun @christianloeffler’s concerpt in Yerevan was in January, but because he got sick the day before, it was postponed and turned into Concerpt №2. Then there could be a text about how much fun Löffler’s concerpt was in April, but we didn’t even get to announce that one as the coronavirus was quicker to announce its tour dates. And the only thing we can do now is share this mix, which is so good and so much about the days we are living now; days that have definitely forced us to rethink our lives and pay attention to the invisible happy moments that until now got lost in our daily routine; and generally times that will make us look at the life we had before and change the way we’ll look at the days we are going to be living once everything is over. It all may seem too romantic or far from reality, and things may return to their normal state after all, but nothing will be the same anymore. And this mix will remain as the sole thing connecting us from the past days to ourselves in the days to come.

Christian Löffler - "Concerpt №2" for RAMBALKOSHE

Many of you know that “el mundo” means “world” in Spanish, and whoever did not know, hopefully does now. Here’s a question, though: what exactly do you mean by “world” and what do you imagine it to be? Can you feel whatever you are imagining? Can you feel yourselves or your surroundings to be a part of it? Can you feel that so many invisible and apparent threads are bringing all of us closer together in any of the worlds any of us can ever imagine?

And now something new is going on in each of our worlds, which helps us all better feel those connections.

Regardless of how strongly and deeply any of us can feel that, we all definitely understand that everything is going to be a little different in the world we have imagined so far, and that  we too are going to change, and that the world will not be the same either.

El Mundo - "Glitch" for RAMBALKOSHE

Everything is important, no matter what you mean by "everything"․ When we asked @acid-arab for a title, they came up with "kuchh"․ So if you are not Indian or don’t speak Hindi, there’s a great chance you have no idea what the title of the set means, though you may be able to catch it at the beginning of the set. Kuchh (कुछ) means “some” in Hindi․ There you go. Now try to remember in how many ways and in how many places you can use the word “some”, and depending on where you use it, it will mean completely different things. There will only be a subtle difference between the various meanings, but those subtleties make all the difference. Sometimes we just go with the flow and take many things for granted, without realizing how easily we can lose something we thought we’d always have by our side. We also take so many people for granted, without realizing how badly we sometimes hurt them. We even take ourselves for granted, without understanding how much we still have to go through and how many important subtleties will come our way. These may just be SOME thoughts we are having here that may not be all that important, but on the other hand if you have read so far, maybe they ARE important after all.

The past weeks showed vividly that whether we wanted it or not, we are part of something bigger than ourselves, be it a family or a community, some global ideas or plans, a continent or a constellation. Doesn’t really matter what we are part of, what matters is that we need each other. Maybe once these days are gone, such feelings will go away too, but we’ll know we’ll be needing each other someday somehow. @elias-dore’s podcast is part of that syndrome. A lot of people teamed up to make stuff happen, so that you could listen to the mix, and once you do, you automatically join the list of those suffering from the syndrome. You are definitely a part of this project, and that is very important.

Elias Doré - "A Glimpse" for RAMBALKOSHE

Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going? Besides being the name of a famous Gauguin painting, these are questions that have most probably been valid for any given time period. In ancient Greece, Socrates believed that the purpose of the human mind is to explore the nature of virtue in order to perfect the soul and build a life based on ethical knowledge. Epicurus thought, meanwhile, that the goal of living is to receive pleasure, not sensory though, but through getting rid of physical pain, emotional restlessness, suffering and fear of death. Medieval Europe and India, despite cultural differences, had the same understanding of the meaning of life – worship of ancestors, adherence to common religious and mythical ideals, and the importance of ascribed status. Schopenhauer defined a person’s life as the product of a metaphysical will: people think they act on their own, but are in reality driven by someone else’s will. Danish philosopher Kierkegaard argued that life is full of absurdity and that humans must create their own values in an indifferent world. Pragmatic philosophers believe that instead of searching for the truth about life, people should seek a useful understanding of life. And so on and so forth. Natural disasters, epidemics, wars, the rich and the poor will come and go, but questions about the meaning of life and those who seek answers for them have always been and will forever be there. The text turned out this way perhaps because when listening to @oh_why’s music, you want to either ask yourself Gauguin’s questions or be the one who finds the answers.

O/Y - "LIVE at home" (live set) for RAMBALKOSHE

The more we live in the new realities, the harder it becomes to imagine what life would be like if the virus thing had not happened at all. It’s only a matter of time when we’ll run out of days we had planned before the pandemic, which became invisible pages in some unwritten book. We’ll then come to terms with the new days, realizing that we are going to divide life before the isolation and after it, stuck amid some incomprehensible present, a what-we-could-have-done past and the what-comes-ahead future. No matter how fast we come to terms with the fact that we need to redefine and re-plan everything, and no matter how soon we decide to abstain from planning anything at all, we are nonetheless going to have a small and insignificant feeling of regret for the days we thought were important and were going to change the way we felt and the way saw things. And those “unfulfilled days” will remain the only link between the former and future realities.
@vikenarman and @acidpauli’s six-hour set they played at @Rambalkoshe marked, in some sense, the beginning of their joint performances. They were supposed to play b2b all night long at Berlin’s Watergate club today to officially kick start the new chapter both of them were so passionate about. To celebrate such a milestone, we are publishing an excerpt from the set this unbelievable symbiosis played at Rambalkoshe a year ago and took around hundred people to a different dimension, filled with nothing but incredible and infinite energy.

How are you? No, seriously, how are you? Do you feel the way you thought you would feel a month ago, or do you not feel good at all, but realize there’s no other option? Maybe you hadn't imagined anything in the first place but now you wish you had, or you feel neither good nor bad as those two words can’t really describe the way you feel. What is the thing that has changed but which you would rather keep the same way, and vice versa? What have you been missing the most from your life from before the pandemic and what will you never ever miss again? What has lost its meaning and what has acquired a new one? What have you decided to do once the lockdown is lifted for good, and when and where will you travel to when the planes start to fly again? How pleasant have these days been for you, or to what extent do you think they should never have occurred in the first place? There are always more questions than answers but everything seems a little mixed up right now. Anyway, today’s is the last Monday of spring, and we are publishing @fejka’s set, the 83rd out of 100 mixes that will be created for the “homard” project, which we hope to unveil to the world next year.

Today is June 8, and we are publishing @iorie’s mix, which is 85th out of 100 sets of the “homard” project. Given that the 100th artist today agreed to join us, we can safely say that we’ll conclude the musical part of “homard” project this summer and will start working on the “fair copy” of its graphic part. We have no idea who read this far, but whoever did certainly learnt something new, and if we assume that those who did are following our page, they are most probably interested in all this.

When everything’s over and we look back at the 100 sets we’ll have accumulated, we’ll realize that each of them has a special and beautiful story, created at the right time in the right manner, and the one by @justemmaoffical is no exception. It’s been a long time since we first proposed that they join the project, but it didn't work at first due to scheduling conflicts. Then the Covid days arrived, the pair got some free time on their hands to record a fresh mix, then we found out that Rambalkoshe would be participating in SOUQ Festival, and that we were going to need an opening act, so they managed to create the set just in time for the festival. But the reason why the set is titled “chapter one” is a whole different story you can ask them yourself about.

Just Emma - "chapter one" for RAMBALKOSHE

Imagine an inch-high hourglass as thick as a thumb, with a very narrow neck, that “empties” in, say, quarter hour. Now imagine another one as high as yourself, with a much bigger amount of sand running from the uppermost section through a much wider neck into the lower section in, again, quarter hour. Now that you are done imagining these two, try to use this example to visualize the relativity of time, the boundaries of the present, past and future, and maybe only then time will stop being a unit of measurement for you, with all the delicious food, music that gives you the chills and all your unspoken thoughts becoming units that measure your life, units that are always there, by the way, but we choose to not see them a lot of the time. One of our friends, for example, had been waiting for @mira_kater’s set so desperately that their life is forever split between before and after today.

Mira - "Guide to escape" for RAMBALKOSHE

What should you do throughout your life? Many people think a tree, a house and a child will suffice, others compile never-ending bucket lists involving everything from high dives into water to eating scorpions and a bunch of other crazy stuff. A third group work their asses off to earn as much money as possible and end up dying without enjoying their money, some others make a conscious decision to not spend their money for their children to enjoy it later, while a different group of people choose not to have kids at all. And then there’s those who just want to travel all the time, discover new worlds, meet new people, try new foods, and never plan anything. Today, however, the latter are unable to do what they do best and are instead traveling inwards, exploring themselves and their surroundings, hoping that something good will come out of that too. So no matter how fatal we might perceive the title @timgreen has come up with for his set – "Last Train Home” – it can also be viewed as the beginning of something else.

Tim Green - "Last Train Home” for RAMBALKOSHE

So. We are leaving you to guess what the title of @pablo-bolivar’s mix, Música Para Estar, means, and are focusing on something else this time, namely, the days we are living now. On the one hand, the whole world is experiencing the same pain and anxiety, everyone is trying to help everyone else, realizing or rather feeling how much we are interdependent or connected to each other. On the other hand, though, these days are really, truly about us. How many seemingly important things have disappeared and how much time, really important and cherished time, we have in our possession, so we get to stay with ourselves. Whether we want it or not is of course a whole different story, but the thing is we can. We have more time on our hands, having tangled ourselves with a bunch of things we had invented to keep ourselves busy, and now they are gone, and we have remained alone with ourselves, and it’s probably the first time ever we’ll not only be helping others, but ourselves too, given that no such opportunity will be given to us ever again. We’ll be thinking about everything we have said in the past and what we do today and the promises of the future, about the people who were and are in our lives, those who should be but are not and those we’ll certainly meet but not for now. In fact, we can go on like this forever, and realize at some point that the title, this text, this music, us, our thoughts, future plans, the indelible past and the vague future, and pretty much everything we know are not about the same thing. Or it may turn out that they have nothing to do with each other, and we just want them to be like that.

Pablo Bolívar - "Musica Para Estar” (vinyl set) for RAMBALKOSHE

This set was meant to have a whole different text but when @pabloandmateo sent the mix and the title, everything changed. Occasion or occasions – let’s focus on this. What a comprehensive notion. But what exactly fits the definition here? Birthday, baptism, funeral – why not? – many consider the mere act of leaving their homes nowadays an occasion, while others cherish spending time with their families, or buying ice cream for their grandkids for the first time ever. Right now, this set is an occasion within this project, which means that everything can become an occasion depending on our age, experience, the geography of the country we live in, our perception of life and a host of other things. Turns out that if you look at everything from afar, everyone’s life is an occasion, as is the fact that the Earth orbits the Sun and rotates around its own axis. Everything, really, is an occasion.

Pablo & Mateo - "Ocasiones ” for RAMBALKOSHE

It hurts that the trembling light playing peekaboo from behind the leaves and repelling autumn is less important for some people than what they are going to wear that day. It hurts that we never found those several minutes to observe how a single leaf does finally succumb to autumn, falling right in the center of a puddle left after the rain we didn’t bother to observe either. It hurts that we always hurry God knows where, that we have so many contacts in our phones yet we call absolutely no one, that we talk to each other less and less, especially about things that worry us, things we’d like to share. It hurts that we love less and less and find ourselves bragging about how much we’d love to love. Painful and unexpected as these days may be, they should bring an important change, something that would make us take better care of each other, of nature’s every inch and of ourselves, of what we say and do or don’t do, of people whose loss hurts us, leaving wounds difficult to close.

"I decided to call the mix "On Hold / In Flux" because it feels like the two states that I'm constantly alternating between at the moment. It's about this crave for safety and clarity - whilst also trying to accept the unease of this situation we're all in. Many of the songs on here are ones I've come to love in my teenage-years. When you can't travel to other places, I guess you go inwards. Here's a mix about doing just that." 

“We should really be careful with any amount of trust we are given. Very careful and very protective. We should gather all the trust we have been granted over the years in one place and live with that, realizing that we have been entrusted with something completely unplannable and unperceivable. In fact, it is extremely hard to generate the trust that we’ll have to give to somebody else as a result for some reason. And whoever does receive that trust after all, comes to matter a lot to that person. Trust in each other is the most fragile and maybe the most important of the layers we are standing on. So you have to be really careful not to break it.”

The first paragraph was written by @dorian-concept about his set, the second one is ours. What’s interesting is that neither of us knew anything about the text the other was writing. But someone gathering their favorite songs from their youth and entrusting them to you is nothing short of trust, which is exactly what we need to be careful with.

Dorian Concept - "On Hold / In Flux” for RAMBALKOSHE

They say the journey is more beautiful than the destination but no one ever says that no destination exists as such. Every destination is part of another journey, which in turn is part of another one, which means life is one long beautiful journey and every ingredient is what makes that big journey worthwhile. The more we realize that all of our journeys intersect on an infinite number of occasions and the more we notice those points of intersection, the more colorful and interesting our journey becomes. Now with so many points of intersection between @lucamusto and us, going about our journey without him would be almost criminal. The fact that you are now listening to his very last set from his very last gig at Berlin’s Rummelsbucht before the start of the pandemic almost a year ago is our collective point of intersection that reminds us of the days any number of us could get together whenever we wanted and wherever we wanted, but also gives us hope that better days are yet to come.
