The summer of 2011 welcomed the self-titled debut album from Hollie Cook. Hollie’s self-coined ‘Tropical pop’ sound stems from her passion for reggae singers Janet Kay and Phyllis Dillon combined with classic 60s girl groups. The album is produced by friend and collaborator Mike Pelanconi, better known as Prince Fatty. The debut single ‘That Very Night’ is currently making waves across radio, with Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 2/6 Music), John Kennedy (XFM) and David Rodigan (Kiss) among her many supporters.  The album includes a cover of Shangri-Las’ ‘(Remember) Walkin’ In The Sand)’; transformed from a dark emotive song to one filled with a flavour of hope. The talents of Omar, Dennis Bovell, George Decker (The Pioneers), Style Scott and Horseman also feature across the album.

Best known for her 2008 UK Top 20 hit Heartbeat (also sampled on Rita Ora’s R.I.P) and winner of Best African Act at the MOBO Awards in 2009, Nigerian born singer Nneka releases her latest album, My Fairy Tales 
which focuses on the artist’s roots and Afrobeat side.
Known for speaking her mind in her music, My Fairy Tales tackles subjects as varied as the politics of her Nigerian birthplace through to her own personal voyage of discovery. 
Mixed by James ‘Bonzai’ Caruso (known for his mix of Method Man ft.  Mary J Blige’s ‘You’re All I Need’ and his work with Damian & Stephen Marley), the album’s opening cut, Believe System speaks of the need to connect with your roots. 
On this track Nneka’s highly expressive vocals firmly place her amongst global songstresses like Neneh Cherry, Erykah Badu, Lauryn Hill and the like. 
Second track Babylon tells of regional plight in West Africa over a Fela-type Afrobeat/highlife groove. Next is the first single from the album My Love with its lilting reggae beat and personable lyrics about positive love. 
Other key tracks on the album include Local Champion, about her hometown of Warri, Nigeria, the optimistic and spiritual Surprise plus the ska influenced Pray For You, in which Nneka speaks of the healing powers of forgiveness.
Bringing the album to a close is Book of Job, with its charismatic chorus vocal and finally In Me - two excellent reggae cuts which clearly exemplify this global artist’s talent pedigree.
My Fairy Tales sees Nneka with a new confidence and maturity in both her song writing and performance. All this from a career that has seen her collaborate with the likes of Massive Attack, Lenny Kravitz, Tricky, Ziggy Marley, and more. 
Nneka toured the States in 2010 alongside Nas and Damian Marley (as Distant Relatives) after an appearance on the Late Show with David Letterman earlier that year and has also had singles “Shining Star” and “Heartbeat” remixed by 
Hot Chip’s Joe Goddard and Chase & Status respectively.
Nneka will be promoting My Fairy Tales throughout the year with a European tour in spring that sees one UK date at the Village Underground, East London on April 7th - a date for the dairy if ever there was one.
