We all get stuck talking about how we listen to a lot of Arabic contemporary music, but have little to show for it. So here's a playable cheat sheet: a co-curated year-end compilation playlist curated by Mada music contributors Rami Abadir, Kinda Hassan, and Maha ElNabawi. The playlist will carry you through music from the MENA region, across genres like neo-folk, rap, electronica, noise, and alt-rock mostly from 2015.

Premiere: Oldyungmayn & Estoc - Strike [M.A036]

Stolen Velour (@stolenvelour) returns to Kindergarten Records with another confident display of intricate sound design and mind-bending rhythmic fluidity. In equal parts an embrace of silliness on the dancefloor and a serious piece of floor-shaking heft, Jasper builds on the palette of his last EP with the label, Onyx, and elevates Stolen Velour’s sound to new heights. A pair of label regulars switch up the flavours on the remixes. Sobolik (@tomsobolikmusic) strips back the opener to inject some space and a touch of dub, whereas Despina’s (@despinadespina) take on ‘I Know, I know’ tames some of the og’s wilder impulses to laser-in on strobing breaks and a wobbly low-end groove.
