during the INSIJAM sets, meaning “harmony” in Arabic, the essence of chances and encounters takes center stage –

Combining Musique Concrète with Arabic Traditional sounds, the performance shifts between Experimental, Avant-garde, Spoken Words, Field Recordings, and improv-jazz –

INSIJAM represents my perspective on to the beauty of diverse musical encounters –

In sound art, I mainly work around amplifying chairs and revisiting the notion of DJ-ing.

I write sound pieces mainly by manipulating recordings of Lebanese/Levantine instruments like the Oud, Nay, Qanun, and Tabla. In addition to field recordings, spoken texts primarily in my native tongue, and acoustic and electro-acoustic sources. Ableton Live serves as my main platform for audio manipulation and creation. 

My sound projects frequently resonate with themes of memory, time, migration, and forced existential exile.

This track is part of @systemrevival charity compilation, Past and Future: A fundraiser for Beirut Heritage Initiative.

Beirut Heritage Initiative are a team of architects who came together in light of the Beirut port explosion in August 2020 with the primary goal of assessing historical / old buildings that were damaged, renovating and rebuilding where possible - to ultimately preserve the heritage of the city of Beirut

We have gained access to the construction sites on about 10 occasions and put together a sample pack filled with over 200 recordings from various sounds in and around the sites (during different moments of the project and processes) 

Our plan was to provide guest artists/producers with this sample pack and request a track (any genre) using these recordings/sounds. 

We will give 100% of proceeds from all sales to the 'BHI' and are very excited to be supporting this great initiative.

Part of the course i'm taking with Berlin School of Sound at ACUD on Sounding Art, Verónica Mota asked us to record a 1 min acoustic piece inspired from John Cage's Water Walk. 

Very excited to be sharing with you the piece I worked on with an attempt to explain the work below. 

60 seconds recording of my DDR Anker watch. 

20 second spoken text, which my final project will be around.

Few seconds of a car passing by, I hear and wait till it passes to continue narrating. 

A Few seconds of inhaling/exhaling after reading my text.

Around 10 seconds of me lighting a cigarette and smoking it, I accidentally blew into the recorder, but I like the effect, sounds like an explosion, memories from Lebanon... Mainly August 4th, 2020 the attack on the port. 

Around 5 seconds of tapping my fingers on the table.

This piece is a reflection of my transformative journey, which attempts to address themes of migration, forced exile, existential experience(s), memory, and time, through my reversed interpretation of Alvin Lucier's - I Am Sitting in a Room. 

I arrived to Berlin from Beirut on August 22nd, 2021, hence the duration of the piece, I felt as though I was merely a shell, devoid of life, unable to make sense of place and time. This piece mirrors my own journey of rebirth and self-discovery. I moved from a state of disarray and despair to a space of clarity and self-expression.

Ruuh 'ala tariq tani includes manipulating recordings of traditional Lebanese/Levantine instruments such as the Oud, Nay, Qanun, and Tabla, field recordings from Beirut and Berlin, acoustic and electro-acoustic sound sources, and most importantly my recovered voice.

In 2012, UNESCO launched World Radio Day. Since then, the 13th February entirely in the sign of the radio. This year radio x invited 9 radio stations from Europe and have put together a versatile special program.

At Cashmere Radio, DJ Kohlrabi and rami abi rafi recorded an original show together for this occasion. Starting with sounds from Berlin, the two hosts, one from Japan, the other from Lebanon, developed a conversation through sonic scenes.

Mark Harwood (b. 1972, Upwey, Australia) Mark Harwood is an Australian artist, musician, performer, writer and publisher.Under the guise of Astor he deployed a wide variety of techniques including field recording, musique concrete, electronics and general disturbance. All of these forms are approached with a sense of bypassing the cliches imbedded within, in order to coerce a sound world which is simultaneously contemporary, foreign, beautiful, unsettling and engaging.  Mark has released three acclaimed lp’s on Kye (USA) and Penultimate Press (UK) and the Astor moniker along with a series of collaborative recordings with Graham Lambkin, Áine O’Dwyer, Timo van Luijk, Matthew P Hopkins etc. Harwood has performed all over Europe, USA, Australia, Chile and Argentina. Penultimate Press is a London based music publisher of the esoteric and sublime. Amongst the 50 releases on the label Penultimate Press have unearthed lost works by the Danish Fluxus artist Henning Christiansen and early American minimalist composer Dennis Johnson, along with publishing releases by the legendary Polish outfit Ksiezyc, outsider French instrument builder Jacques Brodier alongside acclaimed works from Aine O’Dwyer, Triple Negative, Francis Plagne, Maths Balance Volumes, Pancrace, Jérôme Noetinger + Anthony Pateras, Joe McPhee and Moniek Darge amongst others.

Jibal As-Sawan - Fairuz - music play by the Rahbani Brothers - Vol 1 - Side A and B -

Sweet Melodies from Lebanon (Instrumental) - Side 1 -

The background to this musical play is of the village of Jibal as-Sawan which was overrun by the next village, led by its chief FATEK. The legend says that a descendant of the family of MUDLEJ will at all times be the saviour of Jibal as-Sawan. FATEK conquers Jibal as-Sawan for over one hundred days and the people become despondent and lose the desire for freeing their country. Some leave and others live in fear. Then it is discovered that a strange girl has appeared in the village. She looks tiny and pale but full of determination and courage.

Soon the whisper goes round and the girl is recognised as being the daughter of MUDLEJ. Hope begins to rise again—the saviour of the village has appeared. The girl rouses the villagers to resist their enemy and to try to free their country to live in peace and dignity. Gradually hope begins to grow stronger and stronger and the villagers indulge in festivities and a new spirit is created by the effect of GHERBÉ the descendant of MUDLEJ.

How does this story end? In victory, of course, when peace is returned and the inhabitants live happily in their beloved village of Jibal as-Sawan.

for a course i'm taking in "Interdisciplinary Audio Production" at ACUD - we were asked by Brendan Dougherty to "Create a piece of music that changes the way we understand the space of the Acud club!" - for this piece i manipulated recordings of the OUD and Field Recordings while imagining ACUD bein a "time machine" -

The book was released in 1979.
This vinyl recording was produced between 26 March to 15 May 1984, with poems read by Catherine Sellers & Pierre Tabard. Gatefold sleeve.

Possibly released in Juin 1984, a year after Nadia's death.

Mon pays longiligne a des bras de prophète.
Mon pays que limitent la haine et le soleil.
Mon pays où la mer a des pièges d'orfèvre,
que l'on dit villes sous marines,
que l'on dit miracle ou jardin.
Mon pays où la vie est un pays lointain.
Mon pays est mémoire
d'hommes durs comme la faim,
et de guerres plus anciennes
que les eaux du jourdain.
Mon pays qui s'éveille,
projette son visage sur le blanc de la terre.
Mon pays vulnérable est un oiseau de lune.
Mon pays empalé sur le fer des consciences.
Mon pays en couleurs est un grand cerf-volant.
Mon pays où le vent est un noeud de vipères.
Mon pays qui d'un trait refait le paysage.

Mon pays qui s'habille d'uniformes et de gestes,
qui accuse une fleur coupable d'être fleur.
Mon pays au regard de prière et de doute.
Mon pays où l'on meurt quand on a de temps.
Mon pays où la loi est un soldat de plomb.
Mon pays qui me dit : "prenez-moi au sérieux",
mais qui tourne et s'affole comme un pigeon blessé.
Mon pays difficile tel un très long poème.
Mon pays bien plus doux que l'épaule qu'on aime.
Mon pays qui ressemble à un livre d'enfant,
où le canon dérange la belle-au-bois-dormant.

Mon pays de montagnes que chaque bruit étonne.
Mon pays qui ne dure que parce qu'il faut durer.
Mon pays pays tu ressembles aux étoiles filantes,
qui traversent la nuit sans jamais prévenir.
Mon pays mon visage,
la haine et puis l'amour
naissent à la façon dont on se tend la main.
Mon pays que ta pierre soit une éternité.
Mon pays mais ton ciel est un espace vide.

Mon pays que le chois ronge comme une attente.
Mon pays que l'on perd un jour sur le chemin.
Mon pays qui se casse comme un morceau de vague.
Mon pays où l'été est un hiver certain.
