Riyadh (Arabic: الرياض, DMG ar-Riyāḍ, meaning "the gardens") is the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and of the province of the same name. The city has 7.8 million inhabitants, and the province 8.5 million (as of 2024).

The city is the economic, administrative, and cultural center of the country. It is home to numerous universities, museums, and historical monuments. Riyadh is the seat of the Saudi Arabian government, parliament, all central government agencies, and numerous diplomatic missions.

Riyadh has been the capital since Saudi Arabia's independence in 1932. Historically, it is a very important transit point in the Arab world, on the pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina, the most important pilgrimage sites in Islam. The main palace of the House of Saud has been located in Riyadh since 1824.

Astana (Kazakh and Russian: Астана; Астана is also the Kazakh word for capital city) has been the capital of Kazakhstan since December 10, 1997. It is located in the northern part of the country, in the heart of the Kazakh Steppe, on the banks of the Ishim River. With a population of 1,528,887 (as of January 1, 2025), it is the second-largest city in the country after Almaty.

The city was founded in 1830 as a Russian fortress. In the 1950s, it became the center of the Soviet Virgin Lands Campaign, aimed at creating new agricultural land. This led to changes in the cityscape and accelerated its development. Following Kazakhstan's independence from the Soviet Union, the relocation of the capital was decided, and Astana became the planned capital on December 10, 1997. In the south of the city, a modern government district was subsequently built, featuring striking buildings such as the Baiterek Tower, the Khan Shatyr, and the Pyramid of Peace and Harmony.
