Restless sleep. An unnamed man is jolted out of unconsciousness, lying in a hotel bathtub. Memory of his past life is gone, thousands of years erased. All he knows is he cannot die. Nothing can harm him. He cannot die, and someone is at the door.

As the perfect void of nothing breaks apart, an imperfect, forever-suffering universe is born.

In a doomed ploy to destroy the horror wrought, a wicked world is given form, filled with cursed life and evildoers. One fateful day, a champion will be born with the power to return all to nothing, as it once was and should be.

Deep beneath the world's surface lies the invention of architects from eras long past: a lake of unspeakable, primordial mud. From its depths, a race of angels are born, human in appearance, with everlasting life and powers beyond mortal measure. Mere chattel and food to their creators, but gods among humankind.

The pieces are set. As their makers sleep, angels make their way to the surface and walk free in the sun. Living unknown among the societies of their human descendants, they influence and change the course of history, for better or worse.

For centuries, the Triton River Delta and surrounding regions have been home to an unusually high amount of disappearances and mysterious deaths.

Despite public outcry, regional authorities have consistently dispelled all rumor of connection between cases. Regardless, locals have devised numerous theories, but legend of a "hollow river killer" persists above all.

In the decrepit ruins of an abandoned brothel near the river's edge, a man without name cleans his collection of knives.

For thousands of years, The Hollow River Killer has moved from place to place, claiming the lives of the lost and wandering. In his chest lies The Firmament of Souls, an angelic gift that houses the spirits of all slain. The cacophony of their voices constantly resonates through his mind; a sound that would drive any mortal man mad. 
9.5. Reasoning with the 1,000,000 Souls Living Inside Your Body
As the apocalypse draws near, the killer must enlist the assistance of the 1,000,000 spirits inside the firmament, making amends with each and every one whose life he cut short.

An accord is reached. For the sake of all things, the spirits will answer the call. Preparations are made to travel upriver.
