Today we’re lucky enough to be premiering what someone in the office just referred to as a ‘serious nugget.’ Yeah, OK, so that person was me. And yes, I did say it to myself, in my head, after listening to it over and over again; but the fact remains and it is what it is. The Critical Music signed drum & bass producer, Emperor’s'She Said VIP’ – which will be exclusively available from the Critical store this Monday – is superlatively frenetic, heaving it’s way out of the rousing build up introduction with the sort of lurching industrial bassline that’ll set most dancefloors afire. The full Into Black EP will be released on vinyl and digital this coming Monday, but we’re toasting the publication of the EP’s pre-order link here today because it ties in nicely with the fact that we recently announced the next Critical Sound date (10th July) where you’ll be able to witness Emperor going B2B with The Upbeats.

Being a production line of carefully crafted composition with a meticulous production standard, Calyx & Teebee have delivered yet again. And after dominating the Beatport Top 100 with their most recent single ‘A Day That Never Comes / Snakes & Ladders’, they won’t be applying the brakes anytime soon, especially in the lead up to their greatly anticipated second album on the Ram imprint.

Back on vocal duties, Calyx demonstrates the pair’s multi-dimensional approach to beat making. With plucky percussion relaying you through bouncing subs and a drivingly solid bassline, it defines their vast repertoire of style. They’re not scared to dip into unfamiliar territories, with Calyx’s cool vocals sitting on top of lulling guitar rhythms to provide the first part of a diverse and brilliantly crafted record. 

‘Sawn Off’ rolls out next; it’s a grittier track than its predecessor, with a conundrum of hi-hats and aggressive drum patterns. Pounding pads take you towards a colossal break, heighten by the effect of a cleverly placed sample. The track ricochets throughout, not losing momentum or impact, with an intricately weaved structure, one only achievable by a team who’ve been running the game for decades.  

With an album laying just out of reach, each single is bringing us closer and closer to the inevitable. All four tracks prove they’re still a formidable force to be reckoned with; this LP will only emphasise that fact. 


Sawn Off

Since the beginning of his career, the name Audio has been a synonym for unmatched power and a colossal presence within the drum & bass community. Competition have crumbled beneath his output, with the producer quickly becoming revered for not only his sound, but for the dark, thematic energy he brought to every live set across the globe.  

Whether it’s causing bass-lead devastation at renowned festivals, like the Czech Republic’s Let it Roll, or the darkest corner of notorious London hotspots, there’s no denying one of the genre’s most profound overlords. 


And following the monumental success of his ‘Nil By Mouth’ EP, which saw him rise to an even more prominent position across the cyber world (amassing thousands of streams within days, despite being uploaded onto a brand new Soundcloud account), Audio is making a welcomed return. 
‘Shatterdome’ is stocky, imposing and forcibly holds you in its grasp. One of the most sought after, climatic anthems since it was first premiered within one of his infamous live shows and rinsed from Ibiza to the US by Andy C, ‘Shatterdome’ manipulates cinematic samples and pushes you into an apocalyptic soundscape.  Quaking with every drum roll, it’s a techy thumper which propels you through on steroids. A fresh cut elaborating on the producer’s impeccable standards, this single is undeniably fierce.

Just as intimidating is the double AA side ‘2 Stroke’. A pounding riddim underpinned by a bassline that reverberates through, it’s gradually built upon with a clanking cowbell before breaking into a synth like structure. Demonstrating a complexity which bares its teeth, whilst being indisputably intricate, Audio presents a flipside worthy of its predecessor.
So once again, it’s time for Audio to lay siege on your aural synapses; no other individual does it like the underground overlord.

Following the announcement that Rampage Festival owner Murdock was set to drop an album on Viper Recordings, anticipation has been growing around its release.

That’s because Murdock has been one of the most pivotal figures in bass music over recent times and this isn’t just down to his events platform, where he’s brought through a variety of acts whilst helping to grow their profiles across Europe. It’s also due to his own records, something which has become a part of his identity as an artist; already delivering ‘Holding On’, his collaboration with fellow Beligan James Marvel, and most recent single ‘Dark Cloud’ alongside veteran Dynamite MC, the LP has highlighted a striking level of diversity. This is about to be followed in quick succession by his brand new cut ‘Let it Go’, once again pulling in another talented featuring artist to lend their vocals to Murdock’s diligent production standard.

M’Leah adds powerful voice on top of emotive layers of rolling bass and melodies which elevate the track’s mood. This is a side of Murdock which he’s previously demonstrated, however there’s jazzy undertones through its instrumentals that pay homage to the genres which have shaped Murdock’s artistic vision. Murdock has previously revealed the extensive list of his inspirators, something which has translated into the music he’s pushed through on the Viper Recordings label, as well as many other mainstay dance music labels who have supported his cross-genre pollinations. And ‘Let it Go’ is another move towards Viper finally unleashing the full musicality that Murdock’s LP ‘Stronger’ has been crafted by.
