'Tarnished Tapes and Saturated Signals' continues the sonic journey I explored in my last album, Sacred Tonalities (Past Inside The Present, 2023). Now, having broken free from the prison of time, I can freely revisit its very beginnings. This is reflected not only in my production process, where I carefully sculpted each sound within a heavily layered texture, lo-fi aesthetic, and analogue recording, but also in the central idea behind each piece. To me, this music brings to mind the hazy memories of playing an old cassette found in the back of my car, its tape warped and distorted by the heat of that last carefree summer, floating on empty roads towards the sunrise, a ringing in the ears still present after a warehouse rave. This blend of deconstructed electronica, cinematic ambience, and modern classical composition fuses a mesmerizing combination of expansive nostalgia, reductionist pianism, and deep emotional atmosphere, evoking a sense of loss, disintegration, and the fragility of our temporal selves.

With his latest solo album Quiet Pieces initiating his imprint Soft Echoes, Abul Mogard mixes composers and collaborators that have permeated his discography and inspirations. An impeccable sense of flow and continuity defines these selections, as Mogard says: "I imagined this mix as an atmosphere you could inhabit – a quiet weave of pieces I’m drawn to. It’s a sound collage of old and new music, where tracks meet and overlap gently, carrying you along in a flow while subtly shifting the scenery beneath your feet." From groaning ambience to trilling winds and warm washes of glitching noise comes a frisson of flutes on Stefano Pilia’s ‘CADUX / Plectere’ over an all consuming rumbling bass drone. Mogard highlights vocals in the midsection: the hissing of ‘Anticredos’, Meredith monk’s harmonic conterplay with arrays of pointillist vocal notes, Félicia Atkinson’s spoken word barely rising from its quietude, before brewing a dense buzzing electrical storm of swirling currents and gyres with the final few tracks, the rugged and visceral clockwork of Rafael Anton Irisarri mechanically crumbling as William Basinski’s piano notes eternally intone.

https://soundcloud.com/mattxavier has been a friend of mine for many years now. A fellow music obsessive and trusted voice when it comes to all things ambient, techno, and beyond, we finally managed to meet in person while I lived in Los Angeles, and we stayed connected over music ever since. 

We’ve swapped stories about pressing vinyl and running labels, and he was the reason I first crossed paths with Joel Mull (Damm) at one of his gatherings held at a beautiful Topanga home. It was a serendipitous moment that still echoes today. 

A proponent for the deeper layers found in music, Matt has since become a practician, ambassador, and pioneer for psychedelic soundtracking. Along the way, he shared tracks from ASIP and other labels that were influencing and guiding his private sessions, shaping the grand masterpiece we present to you today. As his practice deepened, we exchanged many texts discussing his ambition to publish a book about his unique experience and include an accompanying mix on ASIP.

As a seasoned DJ, mental health counselor, and psychedelic guide, his work sits at the crossroads of music, healing, and expanded consciousness.

With over 30 years of experience exploring sound and psychedelics—from pioneering New York City’s early ’90s psytrance scene to cofounding the techno/house label Railyard Recordings—Matt eventually shifted his focus from nightlife to clinical psychology.
