Bahawel - بحاول

I am so lucky and honored to be welcomed by Lebanese artists and activists to collaborate on creating this important and valuable project. Mafi Mafi (Khod) is one of the best teamwork experiences I've had in my life. It all started when the Lebanese revolution unfolded, and I saw the footage of the free people raging in the streets, fighting for their better future. It looked and felt exactly like the revolution in Egypt. I can't explain how proud I was to see the people of Lebanon playing my song El Ars in the streets. I felt so connected to what was happening. And so, I decided to start "Mafi Mafi (Khod)" with a talented group of Lebanese artists working alongside video director Tariq Keblaoui and lyricist Samir Skayni.

In our region we share the same pain. We unite together through art to oppose those in power who oppress us.

The lyrics of the song are adapted from Alaa Abd El-Fattah's words in the article Graffiti for Two (co-written with Ahmed Douma) in Tora prison, Cairo. The article was published in January 2014.

Alaa and Douma are still in prison today.

The speeches heard on the track:
– Alaa Abd El-Fattah's father, Ahmed Seif-al-Islam, who was a human rights activist and lawyer. In the 1970s, Seif was a leader in the student movement. Seif was detained four times, twice during the Sadat era and twice during the Mubarak era. He died in August 2014 while his children Alaa Abd El-Fattah and Sanaa Seif were in prison. (Speech 2014)
– Alaa Abdelfattah's sister, Sanaa Seif, who is relentlessy fighting for her brother to be released. (Speech 2022)

Alaa Abd El-Fattah

Alaa Abd El-Fattah is Egypt’s most prominent political prisoner. He rose to international prominence during the 2011 revolution. As an independent thinker who fuses politics and technology, Alaa’s voice came to symbolize much of what was fresh, inspiring and revolutionary.

Alaa was imprisoned by every government ruling Egypt in his lifetime. He was imprisoned under the Mubarak regime, and again by the Supreme Council of Armed Forces that took over after Mubarak was ousted. He was detained during Morsi’s presidency, then arrested again by the transitional administration that took over after the 2013 coup. That time, Alaa was sentenced to 5 years in prison for organizing a demonstration.

Alaa was released in 2019 after serving his term, then re-arrested 6 months later by the Sisi regime for sharing someone’s Facebook post about prison torture. He was held until December 2021, when he was sentenced to 5 more years in prison for 'spreading false news'.

Alaa's hunger & thirst strike

Alaa has been on hunger strike since April 2nd, 2022. As a dual citizen of Egypt and the UK, he demands his right to a consular visit from the British Embassy. After 7 months surviving on 100 calories a day, no consular access was granted. On November 1st, Alaa escalated his hunger strike to zero calories.

Alaa stopped drinking water on November 6th, the first day of COP27.

Alaa is determined to leave prison one way or another – either alive, or dead.

Described by NOW as an “interesting and magnetic collaboration”, Halawella is an experimental musical partnership between Egyptian singer and songwriter Maryam Saleh, a powerful voice for her generation, and pioneering electro-music producer Zeid Hamdan, who has been described as the “godfather of Lebanese underground music”.

The duo have developed their blend of traditional Arabic songs, hip-hop and electronica, which unites to produce raw, energetic and sophisticated music that reflects the contemporary political situation.

Maryam Saleh & Zeid Hamdan’s work together includes original music by both artists, alongside covers of classic Arabic songs, including Maryam’s personal inspiration, Sheikh Imam, a friend of her father and who she knew well growing up.

Maryam Saleh & Zeid Hamdan - Walaa Soda مريم صالح وزيد حمدان - ولاعة سودا

"El Amiis El Karoo" (The Flannel Shirt) is the latest single and video from Egyptian rock artist and human rights activist Ramy Essam. Released on November 27th, 2020, the song marks 1,000 days of imprisonment of Egyptian poet Galal El-Behairy.

Galal has been imprisoned in Egypt since the 2018 release of the song "Balaha", which he wrote lyrics for. In 2018, Galal was sentenced to 3 years in prison and a fine by the Military Court in Cairo, for his unpublished book of poetry, The Finest Women On Earth. Galal wrote the poem El Amiis El Karoo in Tora Prison, Cairo, in 2018.

The video also highlights the #IwantToBreathe campaign in which people are sharing pictures of themselves having plastic bags on their head, that started in Egypt in 2016: "Prisoners in Egypt are slowly dying because of the deteriorating conditions of their cells." 
"El Amiss El Karoo" is the first release and the title track of Ramy's upcoming album.
