Find A Way

First in a new series of all-vinyl mixes. Ten songs, one take. I wanted to reacquaint myself with some of the records I've collected over the years that have been (mostly) neglected in favor of dancefloor thumpers.

Top Cats - Moondance
Diamond in the rough from an otherwise over-starched University of Vermont a capella group's 1985 recording. I bought this at a Massachusetts Salvation Army years back because, well, I can't resist any album titled "CATastrophe." Nor should you.

Leon Russell - Hummingbird
I picked up this "Best Of" compilation on the strength of the slightly polarized, slightly demonic-looking photo of the musician on the back of the jacket. The rest of the album features Leon's countrified yowling over a range of jazz-tinged rock tunes and surprisingly angsty ballads.

Quarteto Em Cy - Cantoria
The male vocalist on this track certainly isn't one of the Quarteto but the salt of his vocals and the tart of the berimbau add nice flavor to an otherwise honey-smothered 1984 bossa nova masterpiece. Peep their cover of Milton Nascimento's "Tudo Que Você Podia Ser" and cry.

Johnny & The Expressions - Now That You're Mine
Lovely, haunting ballad culled from my mother's teenage record collection.

Kenny Smith and the Lovelighters - Woman (I Can't Do Enough)
This was a true "grab bag" purchase from a friend with a golden ear, collector <a href=http://www.daptonerecords.com/bobandgene.html>David Griffiths</a>. Sounds like ice tea on a lazy summer Sunday in Dayton, OH.

J.O.B. Orquestra - I Believe In Thee
An earnest, if somewhat thin disco number from the Orquestra's 1978 devotive album "Open The Doors To Your Heart." If their "Govinda" track doesn't floor you the cover art will at least sit pretty on your shelf.

The Willow Band - Willowman
Painfully uplifting balearic secret weapon released by Epic in 1976. This is one of my prized 12-inches, the label marked by a DJ named "Bert." Thanks for keeping this one clean, Bert.

Facts Of Life - A Hundred Pounds of Pain
Before she was "Sexercise"-ing, Millie Jackson assembled this Gospel-tinged soul trio. The sleeve lists singer Keith William's hobbies as "handball, tennis, track and Making Love." 'Nuff said.

Newban - Mellow Days, Easy Nights
I came across this reissue in a late 90s East Village, NYC record store, along with Gwen McCrae's "Rocking Chair" and Chocolate Milk's "Action Speaks Louder Than Words." My dorm room lights were dimmed that night, and I was happy.

Sister Sledge - Thinking Of You
Yea, yea... "We Are Family" and "He's The Greatest Dancer" rocked your office's holiday party but I'll opt for this slinky Chic-produced stepper any day of the year.
