The project of Julien Huynh and Will Holden, Hybrid Man returns after releasing four spacious cuts of downtempo breaks and house in 2019. This time debuting on Butter Sessions, the tracks on Shapeshifting feel like a natural progression, equally well-crafted with the DJ in mind but with a slightly more trance influenced modus operandi.

Opening with ‘Virtual Language’, the duo seemingly nods in the direction of Richard H. Kirk’s seminal Virtual State album, inspired by the futurism and warm robotic soundscapes of the 90s ambient techno scene. Dub FX and swirling basslines underpin the stylistic make-up of the EP, sharp breaks on the title track recalling 5AM catharsis in a pre-lockdown state of loved up rave bliss. Combining propulsive sequences with melancholic pads and melodies that are as easy to grab onto as they are lost the morning fog, the pair show a talent for holding the attention of the keen listener as they might the dancer. Indeed, those already attuned to the contemporary Australian underground might recognise Holden’s name from his slower paced work with Low Flung (also previously on Butter Sessions).

Jon Jones (@jjonjjones) is first to contribute to the DS global frequency database, with a blissed-out 3-track EP, 'Hyla'. In this program, we are situated in an open-world environment with a densely populated 3D rainforest installed. Here we will explore the realms of cybernetics and it's correlations between ourselves and the natural world.

Program A is a transcendent journey, dosed with a utopian vision. Organic progressive breaks and a mycelial 303 acid line, infused with euphoric beauty, all maintaining the organic touch that really defines Luke's music. 'Gateway' is best defined as a simulation of ascending the stairs to the higher plane. 

Program B1 'Nor Heaven, Nor Hell' is a deep, swirling cosmic trip. An echoed inward spiral driven by an earthy groove and beautifully weaved percussion, all lifted with blissful pads. This program is optimised for forest use.

Program B2 is a soundtrack to your personal interpretation of paradise. Tune in your frequency and let your imagination roam free. Thoughts of luscious glades with water reflecting the sun at it's highest, drifting weightlessly above a natural utopia.

RDS plumbs the depths of analogue texture on his Kalahari debut proper. Following a guest appearance on Eversines’ ‘Plooi’ EP, the Amsterdam artist returns to explore the more expansive integers of his hi-tech sound across four deftly crafted tracks.It's exactly the sort of enveloping, sophisticated material we’ve come to expect from a De Lichting member.

Straight deep space manoeuvres on the opener. Setting billowing widescreen pads against solid, tight groove, ‘2312’ feels as if it’s escaping the eye of some turbulent solar event. Then, landing with a sensitivity absent from the harsh climes of its predecessor, ‘BBsuite’ leaps from translunar to tenderness with dappled keys and lithe breakbeat intricacy. Saying that, there’s still something undeniably explorative and sc-fi in its mood, almost reminiscent of Orbital or Future Sound of London.

There’s more refined deepness on the flip, starting with ‘Silky’s supple, slinky flex. Forlorn, exquisitely widescreen ambient techno, it treads between the warm optimism of early Detroit modes and a certain somber melancholia. And finally, ‘Autechrein’ finds RDS smudging his palette on a dusty, downtempo overhaul of the after-hours formula.
