NOTES
Catalonian composer Pablo Casals became interested in music at an early age, learning to play the piano, organ, violin and cello, and went on to become one of the world’s greatest cellists. Casals was a composer as well, and while many of his sacred vocal works are in Latin, this unique, very deeply-felt piece was written with words in Catalan by Catalonian music educator and poet Joan Llongueras i Badia. Eucarística was composed in 1934 for the boy choir at Montserrat Monastery in Spain.  —RS

Dazzling as the sun,
the face of Jesus on the mountain,
like the face of Moses

Transfigured for disciples’ eyes,
