Kaleidoscope Eyes (Orig Improv)

From a late night of mods and repairs for an assortment of electronic gear with documentaries  on deep space exploration for background accompaniment... This is an excerpt Live Looping improvisation recording of my Godin Multiac Steel Duet (432Hz Tuning) running through my Oopah Loopah rig.

Cheers everyone here! My first time posting, i'd like to share an imaginary soundtrack at 432Hz Tuning for the deep space fans here...
All sounds were played live with the LR Baggs pickup equipped Godin Multiac Steel Duet Guitar running through my Oopah Loopah rig effected with Stealth Mod Boss CS3, Yamaha Magicstomp, Boss OC3 Super Octaver, Eventide Time Factor, Eventide Space, Eventide Pitch Factor, Eventide H9, TC Trinity, TC Mini Spark Boost and the Boomerang III Looper. Mackie 802 VLZ3 Submixer. Power supplies by CIOKS and Eventide/CIOKS. Interconnect patch and Instrument Cables by Analysis Plus.

Sketches of a Recurring Dream

Was coaching a young player wanting to learn how to play this pretty jangly song originally by Robert Smith of The Cure... hopefully in time to impress his girlfriend on Valentine's Day. His Godin guitar was unusual sounding due to the strings buzzing and rattling over worn frets and a weird bow on he neck. 

i decided to experiment with a parallel upper octave pitch shift tone on the Eventide Pitch Factor which surprised me giving the guitar a strange but charming pseudo Rickenbacker 12 string sound LOL Combined with live singing (trying my best to recall the words to the song ;) into the Shure 55 SH ii Microphone into my TC Helicon Voicelive 2 also dialing in an octave up with gender control tweaks to shape the tone to a more female character singing parallel harmony to my voice. Recorded direct into Cubase 6.5. 

Well i guess i just stumbled upon a new song to play for Valentine's day myself LOL. .   

Friday I'm In Love (Rattlin n Buzzin) - Tribute to Robert Smith The Cure

This is a live recording of my voice and guitar rendition of what i consider one of the most beautiful song of the last century originally by Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes of The Buggles. 

Performed with my Oopah Loopah Live looping rig. I sang into a Shure 55 SH II Mic into the TC Helicon Voicelive 2 and the Godin Multiac Steel Duet running the Boss CS3 (Stealth Comp Mod), Boss OC3 Super Octaver and the Eventide Pitch Factor.

Norwegian Wood (Tribute to The Beatles)

This is my 'strum and sneer' sketch of the Beatles' "I'm the Walrus" It's part of my sonic texture experiments with the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 which allows me to sculpt sounds for my voice as well as for the guitar. The pseudo 12 string sound was achieved with the Eventide Pitchfactor. Voice was sung into my modified Shure 55SH Series 2 Undiyne (Elvis Mic).

I Am the Walrus (Tribute to John Lennon &  George Martin)

Inspired by the recent news and documentary film of Roger Waters Tour of Pink Floyd's The Wall.  

This track is my live loop jam reinterpretation of Another Brick in the Wall part by Pink Floyd from the album "The Wall" This track was performed live with my Fender Customshop 54 spec'd Strat loaded with the classic hissy/hummy single coil pickups. The tracks were performed with live looping using no other instrument or prerecorded tracks with my Oopah Loopah live looping pedalboard straight to Cubase 6.5. 

The guitar amp tones are from the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme. All sonic texture effects and treatments were done live with the Eventide H9 Max, H9 Core, Timefactor, Pitchfactor, Space and Mixing Link. My preferred live looper is the Boomerang III + Sidecar.

Additional Info;

Photo was taken in Pompeii ruins in 2012, thanks to Massimilano Liverani for making my dream come true. Photo was shot with the Infrared modified Nikon D80.
 
Sorting out Oopah Loopah reconfiguring the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme with the latest Betaware to test out the new improvements over several important functions that i use. Also recently updated all the Eventide Factor pedals with the latest firmaware and along the way made an accidental deletion of all my onboard custom presets on the Timefactor, Pitchfactor and Space Yikes! Luckily with the cool servie support i was able to recover my archives with the H9 app and decided retweak all my settings and save them in my archive (hopefully i'll remember them when the next Oopah moment happens again. Along the way i recorded a little home live loop jam inspired by Roger Waters' The Wall...I'll upload it next for your listening preview.

Another Brick in the Wall (Live Loop Improv Jam)

The boy reminded me of that beautiful innocent light, sense, perspective and spirit of joy, hope and wonder that i once had and held on so tightly to, all through the years into adulthood as my guide and strength navigating through this all too confusing maze of life. Somehow, somewhere along the way through the wears and tears of growing up, dreaming and longing to fly but falling and failing and picking myself up to walk on and try and try again, with wings dusty and ragged, that light, my guide and strength began to dim and fade into a distant memory... But the words of the boy rekindled a forgotten truth with such clarity it almost hurt but helped me. That light never ever went away. It was within all along. 

I'd like to share this piece with one and all here. It's an excerpt from a late afternoon free improvisation sound check which led on to a free flowing creative process. I've titled it "In Search of Light" inspired by the recent incident with the Boy who said things that affected me in unexpected ways. Maybe i should release it in it's entirety? In Search of Light (Excerpt 1)

This is my live capture interpretation of what i think of as one of the most poetic tragic songs originally written by Leonard Cohen in 1984 on the album Various Positions and reinterpreted brilliantly by the late great Jeff Buckley on his 1994 album Grace. 

This is one song that almost destroyed me because for me it's about total surrender, shedding off all sober inhibitions to complete joy and tragedy. The song is beyond traditional musical niceness and correctness in words, pitch, melody and phrase...One has to be almost broken down to honestly convey and bring out the complex layers of mixed emotions and thoughts, beautifully brought to blinding light by the late great Jeff Buckley. I sang this with a lump in my throat and welling tears in my eyes.




 

Hallelujah (Tribute to Jeff Buckley & Leonard Cohen)

This is one of my experimental renditions of the gorgeous song originally written by David Bowie included in his  1971 album Hunky Dory. The original piano parts were played by Rick Wakeman of Yes. 

Voice and Guitar were sonically treated live with the retro sounding effects that i tweaked within the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme.

BlackStar (Tribute to David Bowie)

Was tidying things in the workroom and decided to do some needed maintenance work on my guitar and "Oopah Loopah" my live looping pedalboard and patched things up to do a test run of my rig, was thinking of David Bowie and decided to try out this song and captured this along the way.   

This is and excerpt of my voice and guitar interpretation of the song "Wild is the Wind" It was originally written in 1957 by Dimitri Tiomkin and Ned Washington. Among the many who have sung this song my personal favourites are Nina Simone and David Bowie, to whom I dedicate to as my tributes to. Hope you enjoy this and thanks in advance for listening, commenting and sharing it. 

Lately i've been experimenting with various fun results with the "Transducer" effect in the TC-Helicon Voicelive 3 Extreme tweaking for variations of light saturation grit in in the vocals. The guitar was a Godin Multiac Steel Duet running through the Eventide H9 with the recently released SpaceTime algorithm.  Perhaps i was inspired by the sweeping arrangement of the song's lyrics and melody and went about tweaking the overall sound treatment of the sounds to recreate the imagery of howling in the middle of a whirlwind... i think.

Dedicated in loving memory of the late great Johnny Cash for his life changing year 2002 reinterpretation of the song "Hurt" by Trent Reznor from the great Nine Inch Nails album "The Downward Spiral" from 1994.

This take was one of several ongoing home studio recordings experimenting with the gorgeous sounding UK designed and made Aston Microphones specifically the Aston Spirit model for this song.

Vocal was captured live with the Aston Spirit Microphone with Analysis Plus Genesis MIc Cable into TC Helicon VoiceLIve3X. For Guitar, I played my Godin Multiac Steel Duet feeding direct to my Oopah Loopah rig running the following devices; Eventide Mixing Link --  Modified (Stealth Comp Mod) TC Helicon VoiceLive3X, Boss CS3, Eventide H9 Max, H9 Core, Space into Mackie VLZ4 802 Submixer to the Tascam US2000 Interface into Cubase 6.5 64bit on Win10. 

I use the Mackie Big Knob Studio Command System which helps me get acquainted with the captured live mixes played back from a choice between the Dynaudio BM6 MkIII + BM14S Sub and the Dynaudio BM6 and a pair of small Altec Lansing PC speakers. For tracking I use the PSB Headphones.

Hurt (Tribute to Johnny Cash & Trent Reznor)

Nothing Compares 2 U is probably one of if not the most beautiful of compositions by Prince originally on the album "The Family" in 1985 but went on to captivate the world hearing it through the incredible unique voice inflections of Sinead O Connor's version released in 1990.

I grew up developing a deep love for sounds and the wide diverse aspects of sciences, technologies, philosophies, cultures, art and take fascination in all the cerebral stuff but also instinctively love and live simply with and for the music.

This coming Saturday evening will see the coming together of musicians, music lovers and fans for the ConTribute Prince event at Artistry. Here's sharing a live jam take from the first get together session with Yi Zhe Seow playing the bow on the Acoustic Upright Bass. Yi Zhe sounds gorgeous and his tasteful musicality always adds and complements the intended vibe of the song. Cheers everyone here's looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday.

Nothing Compares 2U (Tribute to Prince & Sinead O Connor) Randolf & Yi Zhe Live Jam

This live to 2 track recording is a test run of my Godin Multiac SA acoustic electric guitar  with the Polybass replacement daughterboard's wonderful sounding preamp. 

I've made some tweaks to the Polybass preamp to allow my steel strung Godin guitar to be able to easily shape the overall tone with the Godin Multiac SA's onboard controls for a nylon string vibe.  The song is my reinterpretation of Neil Young's beautiful "Harvest Moon". 

The overall sound achieved as is with my voice singing into the Aston Spirit Microphone and together with the Multiac SA + Polybass plugged straight into the TC Helicon Voicelive 3 and recorded into my Cubase based DAW system. All effects heard, hopefully in good taste were done with the  Voicelive 3.

The Polybass is designed by Matthias Grob of Paradis Guitars and also the inventor the Echoplex Digital Pro.

Additional Notes;

The Godin Multiac SA uses the RMC pickup system which is a design consisting 6 individual piezo saddles and so is able to sense each string separately and is also how the SA model is able to send out via the 13 pin cable to drive Roland GR and VG series of Guitar Synthesizers like the GR55 and VG99. The RMC's isolated pickup design of strings directly sitting on each piezo saddle piece is a brilliant design that solves the age old problem of the Roland GK pickups that are also isolated for each string which Roland calls their design "Divided Pickup" but is designed more like micro traditional electric guitar pups where it is positioned under each string but with a necessary little teeny weeny space between string and pickup, without direct physical contact. The RMC's design eliminates the need for the player to be mindful to play softer as one plays higher up the neck which is a great thing and also because of constant direct contact with the string picks up more natural highs from the string. The Multiac Duet which is the model I usually play uses the LR Baggs dual pickup system consisting a ribbon piezo strip that sits under the traditional single saddle and also an internal transducer pickup which is what picks up the body vibrations and overall resonance. In this design the piezo pickup sits under the saddle and senses the vibration of the string transferred through the material of the saddle onto the piezo which is what makes it sound different from the RMC design. Over the years I've learned how to tweak fine adjustments to the dual pickup system to achieve the right balance of the 2 pickups to get the sound I need for my intended purposes. I have also noticed that every other Godin Multiac Duet guitar needs to have the Dual pickups individually tweaked to achieve the same but always slightly varied results. Somehow I have grown to love the sound of the Duet models much better because the internal pickup does help to make the overall sound more alive and acoustic like. The stock RMC pickup and preamp design on the Godin Multiac SA is noticeably brighter and punchier sounding when compared with the Dual pup sound but the tradeoff is that it also sounds less life like. This may not be a problem if the Multiac SA is played in an ensemble setting but become very noticeable when played as a sole unaccompanied instrument. The good news is that Matthias Grob the designer of the Polybass took notice of the Godin/RMC preamp's tone stack character and replicated that on the Polybass but has also included simple little user option tweaks to bypass or reshape it and also has included 6 individual gain pots for each of the 6 piezo for users to fine tune their string balance for personal preference. The overall preamp's components used in the Polybass are of a much needed updated improvements in overall performance and sound.

With this Live Looping 101 FB Group i am hoping to create a satellite interest group for more folks from South East Asia and perhaps over time develop interest and reach out to more participants from the rest of Asia. Along the way when some of you wish to progress further and venture deeper into the rabbit hole i will urge you without hesitation to join the International community of some of the most brilliant creative folks i know and have played with at "Loopers Delight" and "Live Looping" FB groups. Hopefully through all this will spawn more and eventually achieve what me and others hope for...to bridge the cultural diversities in this world and along the way let good things happen. Along the way please keep good thoughts and fingers crossed for me as i undertake small but necessary steps to turn the dream to reality. Thanks for the support and friendships always everyone!
