Premiere: Riva Starr x Todd Terry - This Is The Sound - Hot Creations

The modest legend Harry Romero has returned to Defected to give a preview of his coveted House Masters compilation, ahead of its full release. This sampler contains four exclusive updates of some of the producer's top tracks from his expansive career. Kicking things off the New Jersey producer revisits his collaboration with major house vocalist Inaya Day 'Rise Up', creating a more driven version drenched in classic house influences, full of funky percussion and vocal soul. What follows is 'Revolution', a powerful, modern Jersey jam, layering a familiar vocal loop over tight percussion guaranteed to get any dancefloor jumping. Another collaboration between Romero and Day, 'Just Can't Get Enough', is given a smooth update by Jamie Jones, giving clarity to the infectiously funky bassline. Rounding off the collection nicely, Romero returns to his Honey Dijon and Charles McCloud's 'Personal Slave' remix, turning it into an extended synth-spliced club workout, looping the vocal for a very fresh take on the murky and seductive original.

East-London's Riva Starr joins Defected's illustrious list of House Masters as he continues to establish himself as one of the world's top DJs and producers. Growing up surrounded by the rich musical culture of Southern Italy, Starr's influences come from all over; the sounds of Africa, Greece, Spain and the Balkans are ever-present within his revered house releases. Genre-wise his approach is similarly expansive, first falling for breakbeat after years of experimentation in Naples, before exploding onto the UK fidget and deep house scene in the noughties. Years later, the Snatch! owner's epic catalogue is brimming with the very best club music this side of the millennium, unrestricted by genre convention and bursting with eclectic samples and unpredictable references. This compilation features club belters alongside deeper cuts that seamlessly mix addictive vocal samples with hard-hitting house rhythms, as well as expert remixes and collaborations with fellow industry titans. Todd Terry, Mike Dunn, Groove Armada, Jocelyn Brown, Dennis Ferrer, Green Velvet, Harry Romero; the list of legendary artists that feature in Starr's eclectic discography is as endless as it is impressive, and throughout it all the Ibiza hitmaker maintains a signature sound that is distinctly Riva Starr.

Two lesser-known but super funky Bobby Thurston tracks get The Reflex Revision treatment, taking these down and dirty boogie album originals and exposing both the Go-Go soul and house roots buried in the mix. Prelude stalwarts Willie Lester, guitarist/songwriter Rodney Brown and engineer Bob Dawson had brought their Washington D.C. sound to the label’s biggest successes, including those of Gayle Adams (“Your Love is a Life Saver”) and Sharon Redd (“Can You Handle It.”) For these slightly grittier Bobby Thurston tracks, Lester and Brown’s band feel every one of their slower beats (102 BPM for “I Know You Feel Like I Feel” and a hypnotizing 78 BPM for “I Want Your Body.”) From 1981’s The Main Attraction, “I Know You Feel” seduces you with old school brass and a traditional structure; it practically begs you to find a dance partner. Isolating the vocals and backbeat, The Reflex makes Louie Oxley’s filthy Go-Go Moog bassline the star of his Revision. He also reveals Theodore “Sugarbear” Jones’s fabulous but hidden Chic-esque guitar riff. 1980’s “I Want Your Body” features a more radical Revision from The Reflex, starting by exposing the lush strings and brass and holding off the “drop” of the funky drummer until the final minute of the song, by which time the sexual tension has reached breaking point.
