Twas council before Christmas, when all through the town
The majority schemed, the vice mayor wore a frown
Indictments were filed with the court with great care
In hopes that a trial would soon be held there

The staff were all nestled so snug in their beds
While dreams of good leadership danced in their heads
Caleb in his sweater, us both in our coats
Settled in for a series of dishonest votes

When up on the dais arose such a clatter
I sprang from my chair to see what was the matter
When what to my wondering eyes should appear
But the four council members, Mayberry drew near

With a leader so smug, with no ounce of regret
I knew in a moment it must be Ben Nett
More rapid than eagles his lackeys they came
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name

"Now Kwasi! Now Carol! Now Chris and Khalil!
Our cause is more righteous, our mandate is real!"
The Vice Mayor held a tight grip on the reins
Loose-lipped councilmembers had caused him disdain,

With their mouths they would smile, with their eyes they did not
And they rushed through the votes, with almost no thought
Mayor Chris was completely a grinchy old elf
I grimaced to see him, in spite of myself

And Khalil with her almost perpetual frown
Replied to her emails with “Move out of town!”

They spoke endless words, to distract from their work
Ramming through crazy plans, then they turned with a jerk
And laying a finger aside of the gavel, the majority rose, and the town did unravel
Then Nett sprang to his ride, to his team gave a whistle
And away they all flew like the down of a thistle

We see now this damage was done by design
