Story
Song of the Talking River
In the red stone hills, where the baobabs stand silent, lived a Shona community that gathered around the fire every night. There, the elders posed riddles for the children to solve with laughter and theatrical games. One of the oldest riddles was… “What runs without feet, sings without a mouth, and never stops?”
The children responded with dramatizations, imitating animals and spirits, until the answer emerged… the river.
The Myth of the River
It was said that, in ancient times, the river did not exist. The land was dry, and the people argued endlessly. Then, a girl named Nyasha sang a song so pure that the spirits heard it. Her song became water that sprang from the stones, forming the river that still flows through the villages today.
The river, grateful, promised to speak in riddles to those who came to listen. That is why the elders said that the murmur of the water holds answers to human problems... unity, patience, and memory.
The theatrical performance
Each year, the young people reenacted the story of Nyasha. One played the river, another the wind, and another the stone. Through songs and dances, they remembered that natural phenomena are not just forces, but messages from the ancestors. Thus, the myth explained why rivers never fall silent... because they carry the songs of those who seek peace.
