Several years ago, a student at the high school where I teach took his own life. Our school community was rocked by the event, because we pride ourselves on having established a loving, supportive learning environment. This song is simultaneously an attempt to make sense of what happened, through the lens of my own adolescent experience, and a message of hope for any other young people contemplating suicide.

Yo, my biological father opted to opt out,

Placing my faith in the broken home we’ve sewn together.

Now I move through a campus that takes for granted what family is,
But the vantage still produces students stranded like abandoned kids.
Where depression’s rampant, cuz they can’t cope when standards slip,
And questions left unanswered are managed by smoking cannabis.
Where the presence and example of a man exists,
But it’s so damaging it cancels the advantages.
Or only home the days he’s not away for random trips,
Earnings pay great, burning both ends of the candle stick.
Mom’s a prime candidate for psychoanalysts,
And rambling teachers preaching ‘bout exams don’t understand a bit.
Tailor made for failing grades, stress and pressure cancerous,
No surprise these teens can’t handle when the famine hits.
It’s like the canvas ripped, / leaving the surface marred,
You didn’t plan for this / and wanna curse the stars.
But to the lamb you’re perfect, purchased as a work of art,
Freed for eternity when he incurred the service charge.
So regardless of your current marks or life at home,
The Lord is pouring out his glory from the mighty throne.
Speaking when you’re weakest, so you’re never quite alone,
Like breathing in the valley rallying the driest bones.
