Description: Zero 7 Remix Contest Entry - To be honest, I didn't remix this to compete. I just really love this song, so made about 10 simple remixes in GarageBand for my own personal pleasure. No tracks were added, but some tracks were muted, others were moved around, and some have effects added. I hope others like these remixes, too.

I wrote this track back in 1997. Recently I've rescued my old and reliable Korg X3 and remixed the track in Nuendo 4.0. I respected the original MIDI files, sounds, settings and effects. I believe that the result is clearer and more controlled, much in the way I was looking for back in the nineties. All the sounds come out exclusively from a Korg X3 (1993) unit. This is the first track of a series entitled 'Korg X3 Revival'.

It is the future? It certainly sounds like it... What would I use this for? Probably a video game with non-action gameplay. Certainly a montage of some futuristic film... or maybe one of those sandwiched scenes where a person is walking in the rain, but you don't get any of the sounds of the actual rain... just this piece. No dialog, no voiceover, just walking. Do they have a name for those scenes? They must.

Zero 7 - Home (RareWaves Stringy Instrumental Remix)

I’ve been playing around with sounds and music since the late fifties when my parents acquired an Ampex 2-track stereo reel-to-reel deck.  My mom taught and played piano, guitar, and clarinet and I would record these instruments, but figured out that if I recorded in mono on track 1, I could flip the tape over and play along with the backwards track.  After acquiring another similar deck, I was able to bounce these forwards and backwards tracks and would add ambient sounds and drum tracks to previously recorded music.  I guess I could say that I’ve been remixing and manipulating music and sounds for most of my life.  

By the late sixties, I found that I enjoyed mixing sets of songs rather than composing or remixing songs.  I was originally inspired by the work of John DeWitt, creator and producer of “The Young Sound” which peaked in popularity from 1967 to 1972 and aired on many CBS-FM affiliates including WBBM-FM in Chicago.  “The Young Sound” consisted of a series of fifteen-minute segments—specially arranged, blended, and mixed such that the relationships among the songs were as artistic as the songs themselves.  

I studied John DeWitt’s work, practiced and practiced the art of the segue, and created hundreds of sets using a 4-channel Teac 3340.  My tag line has always been: “The Set Is Greater Than The Sum of The Songs.”  I define these sets as, “an uninterrupted arrangement of songs, mixed such that the set becomes a work in itself.”  Much attention is given to themes, musical eras, beat, key, rhythm, and most importantly: relationships.  I found that I prefer building sets one song at a time rather than creating sets live with multiple turntables.  While I totally appreciate live DJs, my instrument is the multitrack recorder.  

Now with non-linear recording, I can create sets in MixTape Pro, Toast, and Reaper (or another DAW) and have revisited many of the original sets that were created from the seventies through the nineties and have uploaded them to Mixcloud along with newly created sets.  So while I still love composing music and remixing others’ music, my real love is making “mixtapes.”  Check out my work on Mixcloud.
