With over five decades of success and influence, Vincent Montana Jr., Producer, Arranger, Composer, Conductor and renowned Vibraharpist, continues to be a vital force in music today. With countless gold and platinum awards to his name, his contribution and dedication to the music industry has inspired and profoundly affected many producers, DJs, artists, musicians, listeners and dancers alike. 

Among the numerous credits to his name, Montana is most recognized for his integral role in both the development of 'The Philadelphia Sound' as key MFSB rhythm section member and established studio musician for Philadelphia International Records as well as dance pioneer of the 'Disco Era' as the creative and driving force behind the legendary Salsoul Orchestra. Further contributions include his remarkable productions with The Montana Orchestra and Goody Goody (Atlantic Records) and particularly, the signature club classics on his own “Philly Sound Works” label.

Given the era in which these recordings were made, the music of Vincent Montana, Jr. was produced with a futuristic perspective; this is evident due to the fact that his grooves and riffs are still being sampled and utilized to this day. The staying power of his enduring career is certainly because of his exceptional good taste and diversified talent, but also is the fact that although he is firmly rooted in traditional instruments and ways, he has managed to embrace newer styles and to use technology to his advantage.

Even now Montana continues to make his mark on the industry, whether directly through his efforts with today's most prominent artists and producers - Dimitri From Paris: "The Way You Love Me", Masters At Work: “Nuyorican Soul”, “The Boss”, “Always There”, David Morales: Pet Shop Boys “New York City Boy” or indirectly via sampling of his catalogue - DJ Spiller: “Groovejet-If This Ain’t Love”, Mariah Carey: “O.O.C.–Out Of Control” and the latest sample, Estelle Ft. Rick Ross: “Break My Heart”. Both the man and his music show no signs of slowing down. He returns once again with his latest projects complete with lush strings, distinct arrangements, cool vibes and all the added touches, quality, musicianship and originality expected of a “Montana Production”.

When disco was declared dead in 1979, dance music was forced back underground, leading to one of its most creative periods. Moving into the eighties, post-disco producers were allowed to explore the new technologies emerging at the time with little corrupting influence from the mainstream and New York became a hub for the new electro-funk and boogie sounds.

Having built his reputation playing the latest US dance imports at Wigan Pier and Manchester’s Legend and Haçienda in the early eighties, DJ Greg Wilson is indebted to that sound and has paid homage to many of the cult hits of the era through his reworks and edits.

Greg had originally intended to edit Chemise’s 1982 underground cut 'She Can’t Love You', cherry picking the best parts from the original and dub mix. However this proved unsatisfactory, so instead he decided to take on a full cover, approaching Tyrrell; the guy who did such a brilliant job of recreating Massive Attack and the Rolling Stones - mashed up with Amerie - on his 2005 P.T.A release, which Greg then reconstructed into 'Two Sides of Sympathy', one of his most enduring edits.

Having recorded the backing track back in 2011, he needed to find the right vocalist. His first thoughts were to approach Adeline Michele, the singer from Brooklyn disco outfit, Escort. This never materialised and, apart from a fleeting fancy for recording it with NYC based Lady Miss Kier, formerly of Deee-Lite, the track was put in mothballs for a couple of years, until he dug it out just a few months ago to play it to The Reynolds, who’d sang so superbly on his track 'Summer Came My Way'. Katherine Reynolds took on the lead and Greg instantly knew the song had found its voice. Not only that, Katherine also expertly weaved lyrics from Triple X’s 1999 'Feel The Same' into the track to give it a new twist.

Greg road-tested the recording in a club for the first time in London last December and it’s since become a crowd favourite - the release is greatly anticipated by DJs and dancers alike. Kermit Leveridge, who has worked with The Reynolds on his Blind Arcade project chipped in with the rap section the girls add and also features on a further mix of 'She Can’t Love You', this time coupled with his own 'C’mon Sway' lyrics. Sweet Tooth T is a project channeling the hallowed sounds of New York in the early eighties but - like with Greg’s DJ sets - the sounds from this groovacious past have been reimagined in a contemporary manner.

To coincide with Ian Dury's birthday @dicky-trisco has shared an edit of the great man's 1977 single 'Wake Up And Make Love With Me'.

"The first 45 single I ever bought was by Ian Dury and The Blockheads and was called ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’. I bought it in a newsagent store called John Menzies, which had a black weekly chart board with plastic letters on it that was updated by hand each week.

I can’t really remember how I came across the track, or if it was just potluck. I probably heard it on Top of the Pops, or on the weekly chart show on the wireless as it used to be called back in those days. Anyway I bought it and to this day it is a song that I love and would be happy to hear any time, any place and it introduced me to the music of Ian Dury and The Blockheads.

Ian Dury for me reflected what pop music and music in general was all about back then – a longing to be different and to make a difference. He was a fascinating character. My Dad said he looked like a bloody idiot, which only made me admire him more. When he performed he had a real edge and his singing style was more like someone talking, or at times even shouting in his own London accent rather than something shiny and polished. And you have remember these were the days of The Bee Gees, Barbara Streisand, Leif Garrett and other such highly manicured artists. He also had a tremendous amount of personal style with his hats, braces, rolled up trousers and boots. And it was all this difference literally rolled together as well as the great music he made alongside The Blockheads, which pulled me in as an admiring youth.

And the music…I couldn’t quite explain it at the time. But it was unmistakably ‘New Wave’ although I wasn’t exactly sure what that meant either beyond a handful of artists I was into like Blondie, Talking Heads and The Specials. It was a bit ‘Punk’ and DIY for sure and that was definitely a good thing. But it also had the funk. The Blockheads were a groovy outfit of great musicians. Much later I discovered that Chaz Jankel of The Blockheads went on to make some excellent disco influenced solo productions and that these tracks plus songs by Ian Dury and The Blockheads were played by groundbreaking NYC DJs like Larry Levan in the Disco scene out there and graced the floors of seminal clubs like the Paradise Garage and The Loft. My musical journey from awkward youth to being a DJ myself had come full circle all thanks to Ian Dury and The Blockheads.

Anyway I can’t say I am an expert on Ian Dury or The Blockheads to be honest. I love a lot of their music and it has now been with me my whole adult life while many other things have come and gone. In fact at one stage I used to buy any copy of ‘Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick’ on 45 that crossed my path. But the thing that seems of significance to me and that I wanted to share here with you is the DIY spirit and original style of those times. And they were great times! Acts like Ian Dury and The Blockheads did things differently and did it their own way and gained recognition for what they did via their music around the world. I salute them for that and it gives me, and I hope you, more than a few reasons to be cheerful.

So as a tribute to the genius and spirit of Ian Dury and The Blockheads and as my own personal way of saying thanks for the influence it has had on my life, I would like to share this rework of one of my favourite tracks on this his birthday. THANKS IAN DURY AND THE BLOCKHEADS! Your music really has made me feel like a lucky bastard x "
