DYSTOPIA is an exploration of the philosophical aspects of techno. In this first episode I provide some perspectives on how techno presents an image of dystopian society as well as delivers the coordinates for an abstract world of energy that lies beyond it. I then focus upon the music of Swedish techno producer Lakej as a perfect example of techno abstraction and have a detailed chat with him about his production methodology, musical philosophy, and also his motivations behind starting his own record label. Project 313 is the Detroit-based duo of Chad Parraghi and Nick Bien, known for delivering deep, hypnotic, post-apocalyptic soundscapes. Active since the '90s, they co-founded Blank Code, a pivotal platform in Detroit’s techno scene, curating events and releasing music from top international artists. Their releases on Blank Code, System Records, Northern Parallels, D-Records, and Illegal Alien Records have earned support from heavyweights like Claude Young, DVS1, and Chris Liebing to name a few.

RARE 111 - MIX 007 - PROJECT 313

"You can get deeply lost in the darkness if you let yourself merge with it and not fight it.” With this statement, Denise Rabe vividly encapsulates her musical philosophy. As this episode of DYSTOPIA exhibits, her sound is less a musical form than a collection of sounds generating a tense, haunting atmosphere. Rabe's methods and ideas show with total clarity how darkness, what our society incorrectly perceives as negative, is in fact an opening onto a radically liberated world of abstract forces. In this episode I seek to define the meaning of darkness in techno and Denise also shares her thoughts with us about Berghain, the role of gender within the techno scene, how her personal philosophy is expressed through her music, as well as the fortuitous synergy between her name and the spirit of her music. DYSTOPIA 003: DENISE RABE

Steve Bicknell is one of the foundational figures of the genre and a true veteran of the UK techno scene, widely respected for his iconic sound. A key figure in shaping the London underground, he is known for the legendary LOOP parties and countless releases on various labels, which cemented him not only as a great DJ but also as an recognizable producer.
Originally split into 2 parts, this mix demonstrates Bicknell's admirable DJ skills all the way back in 2001. The first 30 seconds of the mix were deleted due to audio issues, and the 2 parts were combined into one for your listening pleasure. Enjoy this rare piece of history from one of techno's finest.

- This is my first release, and with it, I want to share not just music, but an honest part of myself.
I didn’t follow any rules or stick to a specific genre while creating it—I simply let my thoughts, emotions, and sonic obsessions speak for themselves. Every sound here was crafted with the intention of gradually shaping what will become my sound, my identity.

This project is the first step on a path that’s just beginning. I know there’s still a lot to improve, but I also know that everything you hear here was made with passion, dedication, and a fully self-taught process.

More music will come this year, but this EP… this one is special.

Some DJs treat genre boundaries like walls; others see them as doors. Craig Gonzalez belongs firmly to the latter camp. A staple of Detroit’s underground and a resident DJ at Paxahau’s Third Thursday monthly, he has long been drawn to what happens when techno’s linear propulsion collides with the restless syncopation of drum & bass. That liminal space, the “grey area” between the two, has become one of the most fertile playgrounds in electronic music over the past decade, and Gonzalez shows why. In this mix, recorded as the opening set on the Movement main stage, he handles tempo as a fluid variable, shifting gears without friction and letting polyrhythms function as the connective tissue. It’s the kind of approach that resists the obvious peak and instead builds a topology of groove, a groove that bends but doesn’t break, carrying dancers across time signatures almost without them noticing. 

And while opening a stage that would later host Deepchord, Sama’ Abdulhadi, Octave One, and Jeff Mills could be seen as a daunting warm-up role, Gonzalez treats it less as preparation and more as architecture. Across ninety minutes, he layers patterns with patience, calibrating intensity so that tension rises and releases without tipping into spectacle. The set moves like a conversation that shifts from whispers to declarations, never overstated but always persuasive. It’s a reminder that flow is not just sequencing but narrative logic, and that true mastery lies not in domination of a dancefloor but in shaping the conditions for everything that comes after.
