ANiMALS- INTELLi.G(TRASH EP)

This is a field recording of a Raek trance performance, taken place in West Java, Indonesia, May 2017.
The entertainment/ritual was provided by the troop of trancers/percussionist, in celebration of a circumcision, a religious right of passage in Islam, and practiced commonly in Indonesia. The trance affiliates traded off beating drums to modern Sundanese pop melodies played shrill by the tarompet (a double reed instruments), with then the act of spirit possession. 
An example of the adaptation of the old animist religion, infusing with the modern world; also the crowd is filled with the locals live streaming the performance of possessed young men, contorting their bodies to sounds, smashing tiles over each other heads, eating glass. 
They say they feel no pain, and have no memory acting like bucking horses or banana eating monkies, but can easily open a coconut with his teeth. They are guided by a trainer, one who uses smoke, sarongs, and drums to send the trancer in and out of these fits of expression. Like a spiritual coach, the breath the exstacy of possession, while collecting donations for the artists.
