ToK Uptown Top Ranking - Live Mix, Summer 2012

It all began in 1982 when Rashi's older brother gave him his first 7" single - Judas Priest's "You Got Another Thing Coming" and a 45rpm record carrying case for Christmas. Next was making cassette mixtapes off the local R&B/Hip Hop FM radio station. Then the houseparty boombox takeovers, working in a record store and finally a stint as musicologist and genre manager at MP3.com and eMusic.com. Ultimately, the record store would play the largest role in the California native becoming a reggae music selector.

"I never really decided to become a deejay, per se. I was an avid reggae music fan who came upon a tiny vintage record collection. It was like my calling to share these gems and how dope some of the tunes were."

In 1997 Rashi went from bedroom DJ to the bars and night clubs. His first real gig was at PB's "The Dog" on Everts Street.

"My boys Jaydread, Dash Eye, Lenard, Stoop-I &amp;amp; Unite had a lil thing where we moved the pool tables, brought in all our own speakers, amps...the whole 9, and ran strictly records on 2 technics 1200s. A bunch of Cali hip hop kids turned reggae DJs."

Shortly after, a now-legendary spot by the name of Bar Dynamite opened. The crew was offered the Sunday night slut. Needing a name and vibe the newly-formed DJ collective branded the night and chose to call themselves Tribe of Kings.
