Hailing from the D.C. area and falling back on a lifetime of experience behind the drum kit, Crawdad Sniper is a producer/DJ with a significant rhythmic bent. Already boasting a modest catalog of hip-shaking tunes and sprinkles of funkadelic electronic music, his latest collection of tracks fields sharp sound design and pocketed phasing with a polished profile. In a bid to start the new off with a righteous groove, The Rust is especially excited to host his newly minted EP, Squid Pro Quo. 

Tight, pinpoint percussion dominates the runtime of Squid Pro Quo, serving as the consistent foundation for his rhythmic and melodic arrangements. Taking clear advantage of his time as a drummer, it’s simultaneously the backbone and foreground of the EP, with each hit taking up generous sonic bandwidth. Each track flares with an alternate series of forward and laid back attitudes while keeping the focus squarely on kinetics; splices of throaty synthesis mingle with staccato lead lines and harmonized chord plucks, closing the distance between hard hitting neuro motifs and pronounced songwriting fundamentals. Aperture EP is my most ambitious attempt at leveling up the musicianship of my project while maintaining the sound design. It’s a new exploration of syncopated rhythms and full spectrum bass design , as well as a continuation of my creative journey, playing with themes of light, emotion, and expansion through the introduction of my own singing and songwriting as well as that of Maya Elise on Feelin.

So lately I have become enamored by chaos and randomness, I have come to love coincidence and beautiful accidents, finding patterns in the randomness and living peacefully with the chaos. I find it to be the most constant thing I have witnessed in society, nature, and beyond lately, working its magic inside the smallest and largest systems around me. I see it in the trees, in the streets, in my mind, and amidst my community.
This EP, for me, was a practice of equilibrium. Using randomization tools and effects inside of Ableton I created the sonic palette, the sounds, the rhythms, the harmonies, and tones. I recorded long sessions of the computer doing its thing, creating sonic chaos, nothing harmonious at this stage, but sonic colors to work from. These recordings would act as pallets for the EP, most songs sharing the same colors. I would then, like a puzzle, piece together these pallets, taking the randomness and creating groove, melody, and harmony. Controlling the entropy by allowing the chaos to blossom into something beautiful, or ugly, or whatever the sounds beckon.
It turned out pretty darn Groovy.
