To wrap up the first season of our Satellite Trax experiment, we have called upon a legend in the Detroit underground scene for dancefloor support. A shapeshifter in his own artistic universe, Joel Dunn has taken on many faces over the years. From embodying an electro maestro as @marshall-applewhite, to flexing his footwork proficiency as @cockybalboa, finding all his music on the internet feels like a scavenger hunt. His work has landed on renowned regional labels such as Detroit Underground and Yo Sucka, as well as overseas representation by Scuffed Recordings and Hatched. Dunn has now revived his dubstep-centric alias OktoRed to join the Satellite Era alliance and deliver our first proper release of the genre. 

Known for cutting-edge production quality that disregards genres, Dunn has always balanced his forward-thinking music approach with a laidback attitude - pushing sonic boundaries while simply having fun doing so. Representing the lush underground of one of electronic music’s capitals, he has always worn Detroit on his sleeve. His latest project “Michigan & Rosa EP” is rightfully named after the intersection of a now defunct club, which served as stomping grounds for the early dubstep movement and launchpad for countless careers in the region. It pays homage to his upbringing with a collection of sludgy beats that capture the essence of that era - envision a sweaty, dimly lit room engulfed in cigarette smoke that serves alcohol after hours. The project sets the tone early with “ReSquish,” flexing heavy breaks over Reggae influences. “Raw” recruits Flirta D, one of the originators of grime and a Gorgon City collaborator more recently, to deliver a raunchy track with chopped vocals throughout. “Lit Cigarette” and “Backroom” build off the roots of dubstep, with swingy drums and a grueling low-end presence meant to be felt on a thumping sound system. “Extra Ice” reintroduces shuffling percussion that forms a proper breakbeat workout. “Vengabus” ends the EP on a playful note, covering a Vengaboys anthem as an obscure party trick and slowed DJ tool - available exclusively on Bandcamp.

“Michigan & Rosa EP” revisits an important time in Dunn’s life in sound, all while encapsulating the grittiness of urban Detroit - a realm we hold close to our hearts. He has not only left a mark in the Motor City’s underground over the years, but also a digital footprint in bass music behind the scenes. Dunn’s career continues to be an enigma, leaving much of it open-ended - a perfect end of our first Satellite Trax season. Expect more of the finest up and comers in dance music next year as we continue our journey, one audio file at a time.

HERSTORY

'In My Head It's Green' was made in autumn/winter 2024, in a very productive few months of music-making, which came around due to tutoring music production, which made me look inward at my own production techniques and try to refine things.

Making music quickly and demonstrating how to do so became a priority, so the rough ideas for this EP appeared quite spontaneously. I then spent a lot of time on the minor details, getting really clinical with the drum programming and sound design.

Off the back of my album 'Echo Point Drive' which came out last year, I really wanted to push the bar further with sound design and synthesis.

The artwork was created by artist Kidfue, (kidfue.com) depicting my dog, Buddy in a park. We got Buddy last year, and spending more time outdoors with him has really helped inspire my music.
