Thin, weedy, with his own afro hair that is a kind of tribute to the black roots of a sound shared by funk and house, which make him look like a mushroom cloud! That’s the way in which we love to describe him while he is playing sacred and deep grooves. @giacomopellegrino is part of that particular category of people that really knows very well the meaning of the word passion. He received his “Calling” to djing when he was only fourteen. Son of a musician, following his father around to every concert, visiting the most important clubs and venues of Sicily. Thanks to that experience, he developed a true passion for music and clubbing and, later, for djing. Despite still being too young to perform at night as a DJ, Giacomo started to arrange a few shows for friends, playing sets focused
on dance music from the 70's and the 80's, his first musical love. A few years later, his style became a “monolith” of dance and funk, house and tech. Giacomo has his hand in every aspect of the music scene. He also founded his own record label called @detroitside, which is dedicated to the very passionate vinyl and DJ community. A label that promotes quality over quantity in the house and techno segment. Artist's such as @delano_smith,@bassaclan, @dixia-sirong, @enricomantini, Franck Roger, @julien-sandre, @nick-beringer, @monika-ross, Moreon & Baffa, Ocu, @samofdelaphine! have all released tracks on his imprint. Giacomo doesn't stop there though as he cultivates his own nights in the local area that are ardent about presenting some of the best dance music around in the most optimal and premier environments possible. Still, Giacomo finds time to be a highly regarded producer with releases on a myriad of top-class labels like Purism Wave, Signatune Records, Carac Records, AvantRoots, Vibe Experience, hello strange, Deep Freaks, Greyscale records among others. Heavily influenced by classic sounds of yesterday while thinking about the future of electronic music has inevitably crossed over to his production side working in a heavily analog and modified setup. Analog Four, Roland SH101, Korg Electribe, Korg Minilogue and Jomox Alpha Base are the main pieces he uses. Processing and effects duties come courtesy of Lexicon and Boss while his 24 track Allen Heath console fine tunes the final product for last step before mastering. This is just the foundation of what has been and where Giacomo is currently. In the near future
expect big things from Giacomo Pellegrino, he is just hitting his stride.

Joining me this month for episode 49 is Canadian producer and live performer Mathew Jonson. Initially from the west coast of Canada and now based in Berlin, Mathew’s upbringing in electronic music started in the nineties with the jazz-meets-techno live band Cobblestone Jazz. Collaboration and improvisation continue to play key parts in Mathew’s music career, extending to inform his creative process, his solo work, and his techniques as a live performer.

With this in mind, he created the Freedom Engine Academy, a music school offering intensive courses around electronic music production, music theory, and creativity taught by a roster of talented musicians and Mathew himself. In this episode, we’re discussing collaborative learning, and how the group experience can make music better.

Avenue Red is proud to present a pair of masterful deep/dub techno mixes created by Alastair Kelly, who comes from the seaside town of Ryde on the north edge of the Isle of Wight, just a few miles off England's south-central coast.

Alastair is the man behind the awesome Lempuyang label, which goes from strength to strength as it builds out its impressive roster of luminaries in the deep/dub techno sphere. Lempuyang has pressed and dispatched new weapons-grade materials from many of Avenue Red's most beloved artists, having clocked up 10 releases since the label's inception in late 2021.

These artists include some of our previous guests and good friends: OHM, Octal Industries and Hydergine; Manchester's Vinyl Exchange record shop boss and artist J.S. Zeiter; Mosaic label boss Steve O'Sullivan AKA Bluetrain; Icelandic legend Yagya; Japanese artist Altone; Moscow artist Anton Kubikov; Canadian dub techno specialist Deadbeat and mysterious mad hatter Sa Pa, among others.

It's truly staggering how far this label has come in 1 short year! These two mixes from Alastair help to colour in the picture of his inspirations and trace how these roots extend to the shoots of his flourishing new imprint, along the way showcasing some of the sublime material it has released so far. Etui Podcast #43: Coline

During our trip to the Netherlands in October, we had an opportunity to meet one of the rising stars from the Dutch underground electronic scene that we've been following for a few years now, Ashley Haak, aka Luna Ludmila. The talented DJ and producer from Utrecht stole our hearts with her warm and friendly attitude, vast music knowledge, and incredible DJ skills. 

After contributing a track to the 'Nowhere 02' compilation on SoHaSo and remixing Dwaalgast's 'Maan' track, both of which we had the pleasure premiering, Luna Ludmila released an outstanding debut solo EP on Amsterdam-based Statetly Records in June last year.
With many local and international gigs, already under her belt, including Loveland Festival, Breakfast Club, Shelter, and Paradigm, to name a few, and her upcoming debut at the infamous Awakenings festival Luna Ludmila is one the bright stars from the vibrating Dutch scene. 

Luna Ludmila's mix is deep and dubby, blurring the lines between house and techno with excellent track selection and smooth flow. It's the late-night, after-hour vibe in its finest form.

Kenneth Christiansen is a well-known figure in the dub techno music industry.  He is the owner of Echocord, one of the most relevant dub techno labels, which has recently celebrated 20 years of activity. Since the late 1990s, Kenneth has frequently been spinning at Tresor in Berlin and other popular clubs across Europe.  His career in the genre dates back to his time spent working in record stores in the 1990s.
