My father handed me over to my mom for 2 bands. That's something like $4,300 today when accounting for inflation. I'm not mad at him though! For one, I never felt like a dad figure was missing from my life, because my mom and the people in my neighborhood were enough. Secondly, I don't think it's fair for him to shoulder all the blame for the historic circumstances and predicaments he was put into. I'm not infantilizing a grown ass man, I'm sympathizing with a victim of the times. People don't sign unfavorable deals just for fun, it's usually out of desperation. Similarly, I sympathize with my mom, and sometimes wonder what kind of life they and I could have ended up having had the Soviet Union not been deliberately dismantled. I don't miss the what if world, because "it" never was. In a hilarious twist of fate, I now live and work in the heart of the empire that extinguished the flame of the world I was born into. This empire is not long for this world either, and I fear now is no longer the appropriate time for subtlety. I wasn't born in a vacuum, I don't live in one, and I won't die in one either. I was never lost in a perfect world, and I can never wholeheartedly be happy in a deeply unjust, broken world. Follow the trail of blood, and it'll bring you to the accursed systems at the root of all the pain and suffering. The road at the end of each internal journey has lead me outwards. Expand your imagination and capacity for hope beyond gambling and beyond the available pathways/methods outlined by those in charge. Lock in.
