This was an absolute joy to compose because it had so little planning other than some bassline ideas and chords I liked as possibilites and it just kept growing and morphing as ideas kept coming to me. The title just came to me and I think it suits the music. Finally getting back to the joy composing used to give me and that I took for granted has been a great epiphany and hope you can feel that in the music too.

My Mom recently passed away after a long time of decline, and given what a great Mom and generous and loving person she was, I am dedicating this piece to her with love.

Gates and Variations rounds out a loose trilogy of records by Jake Meginsky for Open Mouth. Not an intended trilogy on Jakes part but it has become one to my mind. It has come to be how I listen to them and experience them, all informing each other, echoing and challenging each other and growing into each others space and light like a garden of plants that would never actually coexist anywhere in reality. Jake is always tirelessly reaching for something new yet I'd avoid using the word progression here. It instead feels to me like the last piece of a puzzle, or of a world created by some Jack Kirby demigod. Something has been completed and now all the pieces are interchangeable. The first can go last. The middle can be first. The whole thing becoming a universe looping in on itself with a multitude of entry points and not a lot of exits. These are dense environments where sections can move from microscopic to macroscopic, day to night and back again,  so effortlessly that its hard to tell if its intended or if something imperceptible within  you shifted the locus of yr perception. But it is all very intentional, something carefully carved to give the feeling of something, though unfamiliar and strange, organic and grown. Theres a sense of danger here like warning transmissions, concussive roiling rhythms and jagged disturbances. Yet also clear straight lines giving way to enveloping curve and staggering beauty. Supplant the beginning with the end with the beginning

a synthesized goose with a so called complex oscillator which is a fancy way of saying two crossmodulated oscillators (fm or/and am) with a wavefolder circuit.
the amount of sounds one can shape out of this "single voice" is incredible. the controller here was important too, a doepfer ribbon controller.

I love composing and many things to do with electronic music and processing of sounds. I also love playing electric guitar and my work reflects both of those loves I hope. I am glad to have found a site with which to upload some of my material. It seems better to have people listen for free, than not to have it heard at all. I have a complicated mix of musical education and tastes: playing by ear at first, then in my teens, taking piano lessons while dropping guitar for a couple of years, getting heavily into synths in the 80s, and around the late 90s after getting good guitar gear, back into guitar again. The last few years I've mixed both of those loves again. Whether I make more CDs is an open question for now, the economic realities being the main issue, not for lack of material.

A lot my pieces are visually conjuring, as in soundtracks for your own imagined movie. Though you won't be able to see it here, obviously, they really work well with things like fractal animations; there's something about the way the images evolve that seem to have a correspondence with the way in which I think of composition in general. 

All compositions are played, arranged, written, and scored by me and all instruments and effects are programmed by myself. The music is self-engineered and produced. I have a long list of hardware and software, but softsynths dominate my copsing now, using such great tools as Synthmaster, Zebra, Bazille, Uhbik, MFM2, Korg's Legacy Collection, Imposcar 2 and Rob Papen's Explorer 6. I have 5 guitars, but mainly use my US made Telecaster and 60th anniversary Stratocaster with a nice set of footpedals.I compose with Cubase Artist 8.5 and Reason 10 on an Intel i7 3820 pc.
