A truly talented artist with huge following and global appeal, Alex O’Rion continues to go from strength to strength within the world of underground dance. With his work spanning some 15 years of commercial releases, the Dutch master is a welcome returnee to Meanwhile with a stellar quartet of original tracks.

A regular across the industry’s finest purveyors of modern and cerebral progressive house music, Alex O’Rion has constantly found his music featured on such esteemed imprints as Hernan Cattaneo’s Sudbeat, Guy J’s Lost & Found and Nick Warren’s Hope. A regular visitor to the upper echelons of the Beatport charts, over a million Spotify streams in 2020 and 4,000 followers points to broad appeal and wide-ranging support.

Now returning to Meanwhile after a trio of remixes for label head-honchos GMJ & Matter on June 2020’s “Gauntlet” and February 2021’s “The Path”, Alex O’Rion now returns to the label with a devastating 4-track original EP of unrivalled quality.

The “Echium” title track is a blistering sub-bass monster that drives along powerfully on a bed of ticking hi-hats and chest-thumping kick. Building in momentum, smooth pads and effortless synth lines flow across the 8-minute piece before revelling in a stripped-back breakdown. Picking up the pace again in the third movement, gorgeous harmonic overtones layer delicately across each other, borne of never-ending delay sweeps.

“Stranded” continues the powerful rhythmic narrative and otherworldly sonic landscape before a percussive loop provides subtle melodic phrasing. Shifting synth sequences bisect the left-right spectrum as waves of white noise fall against a rocky outcrop of percussive hats. Melodic lines continue to evolve in delicate patterns into the second half in a sonic palette of sheer bliss.

A sumptuous bassline groove propels “The Chase” through its hypnotic paces, accompanied by a chugging rhythmic backdrop. Simultaneously, gentle synth motifs pulsate in side-chained synchronicity as a rich symphony of sound swells into the second half against a plucked earworm phrase. The result is a dynamic and devastating club-friendly track that is sure to inspire a multitude of hands-in-the-air moments.

“The Serpent” ends the quadrilogy with its rippling sound effects that cascade in spiral patterns against a melodious foreground. Delicate percussive patterns marry with a deep resonant kick to provide a rhythmic anchor, giving freeform synth motifs the opportunity to express a meandering sonic voyage that reaches a powerful crescendo at the midpoint. Hitting its stride again in the third movement with additional melodic sequencing, the result is a charismatic end to an outstanding original EP.

Eliza Noble and Jennifer Skillman are Eli & Fur: the British live act, singer-songwriter and producer duo whose career together stretches back for nearly a decade. Having formed a close bond in their teens born out of their unwavering passion for music in all its guises, their careers as DJs, songwriters, vocalists and producers has taken them around the globe as touring musicians and seen them grace the stages of the biggest festivals in the world including Coachella, Tomorrowland and Glastonbury. 

‘Found In The Wild’ is the pair’s long-awaited studio debut which will be released this summer on seminal electronic imprint and long-time label home Anjunadeep on 25th June. A dual part album concept, ‘Found in The Wild’ is a sonic presentation of two contrasting and quintessential parts of the unique Eli & Fur sound; two sides of the Eli & Fur which they are finally ready to share with the world, “We wanted to show both sides of us. We are quite varied in the way that we write music and so it made sense to have two parts living side by side. Everything we really love is on the album and we’re super proud of how it’s come together”. 

The first half of the album ‘Found’ is a collection of song-based productions which show Eli & Fur’s strengths as songwriters, vocalists and producers in equal measure. Having begun their careers as songwriters at renowned production house Xenomania writing hits for pop acts like Girls Aloud, Eli & Fur’s talents as songwriters are abundantly clear. 

Released today, ‘Wild Skies’ is taken from the ‘Found’ collection - a sensual and otherworldly ensemble which glues the duo’s trademark textured sound palette together perfectly. "Wild Skies came together so organically and naturally. I felt like I was expressing myself without even really realising how and the melodies just fell out of me. A lot of the time, I’ll write lyrics before the song, but with this one there was no preparation whatsoever, I just sat down at the computer with the microphone and sung, and that was that!” (Fur).  

The second half of the LP ‘In the Wild’ is a change in gear conceptually and ventures into the more upbeat, clubbier side of the project - these tracks explore the girls’ penchant for emotive productions geared for the dancefloor which find the sweet spot between the dark and the emotive, marrying evocative vocals written around their own experiences as young musicians with their unique brand of euphoric club cuts. Presented side by side as ‘Found In The Wild’, the first album from Eli & Fur shows the artists at their most assured.

Navigating familiar Progressive House waters with confidence and purpose, GMJ & Matter’s Meanwhile imprint showcases six tracks from outstanding talents within the underground dance scene as they come together to explore “Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 1”

First up, label head-honcho, GMJ, joins forces with fellow countryman and newly crowned Meanwhile resident, amháin. Through “Flux” the duo charts a familiar course through the progressive landscape with heavy beat and glorious rolling rhythm. Easing elegantly into its stride, a heavy bass groove plays its part as flowing pads and myriad spot effects tumble over each other to create a rich sonic blend. Subtle motifs add a textured layer post-breakdown in an impressive collaborative debut. Having already showcased his talent via the “Horizonz / Push Thru” EP, Imran Khan returns with the beautiful “Patterns of Loss”. Full of emotion and production flair, a familiar heavy kick and driving percussive cadence lay the foundations for an array of melodic strata to sit atop before a mesmerising arpeggio sparkles across the breakdown. Returning to its heavy rhythmic character in the second half, Imran Khan has created another 24-carat jewel.

A regular on Mango Alley in recent months, Forty Cats makes her Meanwhile debut with the hypnotic “Therapy”. Through a glittering array of white-noise effects and stereo-panned arpeggiated phrasing, the Russian artist combines a shimmering sonic palette that filters its way across 7-minutes. Waxing and waning with ease, a standout motif also appears at intermittent intervals to create a familiar aural echo on which to pin Forty Cats’ production prowess. Remixing GMJ’s “Mood Medicine” in June 2021, Paul Kardos returns with the dynamic and elegant “The Producella”. Immediately striking with its aural melange, a hefty kick transforms proceedings as an acetylene-edged lead cuts through shuffling percussive hats. Evolving powerfully, a counterpoint glissando melody provides a subtle shift in emphasis in the second half as Kardos creates a real head-turning track full of meticulous detail and technique.

Fresh from the success of “Deeper Dye”, another returning artist sees Paul Deep hit the heights with “Milo”. Full of trademark production credentials, a beautiful flowing melody ripples across the track, filtering in and out with ease while a metronomic kick and off-beat snare create rhythmic precision. Through a heady combination of rhythm and melody, Paul Deep has provided another seismic creation. The Indian continent is represented through the growing force of Weird Sounding Dude. Making his Meanwhile debut, “Wonderlife” is a charismatic offering that revels in layers of counterpoint arpeggio sequences that propels the track forward. Immaculately syncopated to the dynamic rhythmic foundation, the breakdown is a pause for new, dramatic melodies to come to the fore in inspiring fashion, before the rhythm and arpeggiated foundations drop back in.

“Meanwhile Excursions, Vol. 1” provides an opportunity for a new voyage of discovery as artists from across the continents come together uniting in common musical purpose.

Revisiting the success of upbeat tune ‘Everything, So Young’ by Matter and Graham Baxter, Strange Town Recordings now present a re-release of the track successful for its soothing textures and dreamy tandem of pads and vocals. The re-release also contains a brand-new remix offered by Forty Cats. The Russian DJ and producer, which has released on the likes of Kindisch, Sudbeat and Lane 8’s This Never Happened to name a few, infuses the production with a squelching synth entering from the main break onward. The remix also showcases inventive use of the original vocals, which at many points announce a switch up in the percussive elements of the record.
