Estonian Tarmo Paluoja is definitely an up and coming artist to keep a close eye on! When his podcast hit our inbox some time ago it was a clear and resounding “hells yes” from the 5th Day team, and much later, after sending a fresher recording reflecting the evolution of his sound as a result of a summer full of gigs, we liked what we heard a whole lot more! We're big on connecting with like-minded artists at different stages of their journeys who can show us a thing or two about story-telling, and this hour long dark and provoking beauty from Tarmo is exactly the kind of techno tale we like to immerse ourselves in. For someone who is at in the earliest stages of their own musical story, we’re pretty damn impressed. Deciding to step up his musical yearnings into a more practical endeavour over a year or so ago, Tarmo got his hands on his first controller in 2016, teaching himself to mix and just three small months later, landing himself his first gig. Another three months after that and he was warming up for Blind Observatory. This summer he found himself playing for underground events in his home country on almost a fortnightly basis, and we can only imagine how well his taste for driving, deep, dark and innovative sounds went down amongst techno fanatics who were lucky enough to hear him do his thing! With production and a new event series in the pipeline as side projects, we’re excited to see where his journey takes him next. For now, enjoy what he has to offer.

What better way to commemorate this week's hump day than by getting your On the 5th Day podcast fix, and if you need a mid-week pick me up, this one is definitely for you! This time we bring you Opuswerk, once a well-kept secret concealed by the swiss mountains, now powerfully resonating beyond those fluffy white peaks, reaching Berlin, Moscow, Paris and beyond! Whether immersed in the studio, flying solo or joining forces with Francois X for their HISS:1292 project (or of course getting stuck in behind the decks), Opuswerk is recognised for his ability to craft some very special moments.... you know the ones, when life just starts to make sense! His reputation for delivering is pulling him in the direction of clubs the world-over, whilst also securing him a solid, respectable residency for the Techno Legends nights at le Zoo in his home country. 

In terms of production, Opuswork's solo and collaborative works, released on labels such as Krill Music and Dement3d (as HISS: 1292) have earned him a rightful and deserving place in some of the finest record bags on the planet - Donato Dozzy, DVS1, Peter van Hoesen, Anthony Parasole, to name but a few, and we get the feeling there's a heck of a lot more where these beauties captured on wax came from! It's absolutely fair to say that exciting times lay ahead for this intriguing artist and we're super elated to be featuring him, bringing you a 1.5 hour live recording from his recent set at his own Swiss event, OPUS. Funnily enough, this closing set was recorded in September when he invited Scvreca to play on the same billing - who happens to be our new resident as of January 2018! That is a night we wish we'd been at!

This four-track EP named ‘Curiosity’ from techno duo, Abstract Man marks the beginning of the new On the 5th Day imprint, the latest branch to extend from the heart of the London-based underground techno project. The final outputs of a year-long creative journey in the studio with a focus on analogue machines, ‘Curiosity’ (including Mike Parker remix) represents a chapter of exploration into sound design and manipulation, and the unity and evolution of two separate musical identities through the collaborative process.

The debut release from Abstract Man begins with ‘Curiosity’ itself, portraying the first stages of the pair’s collaboration and inspired by a shared appreciation for driving, hypnotic techno. Mesmerizingly linear and highly textured, the components forming Curiosity’s foundations each command their own space, separately evolving with clear purpose whilst interacting in a compelling, ritualistic dance to lock in the listener. Its overall progression, including an emerging chant-like drone, signifies the manifestation of a new artistic voice, all together making this a symbolic achievement for Abstract Man, as well as a compelling and highly effective tool for the dance floor. The subsequent Mike Parker remix of the same track is another striking portrayal of his distinguishable sound and style, whilst developing to present something surprising and perhaps unexpected from the techno veteran, making this a must for collectors of his work.

Then follows ‘Proposition’, exploring the powerful possibilities through simplicity and symbolising the “less is more” approach which fuelled much of the first chapter of Abstract Man’s time in the studio. The joining of its elements creates a dark, seductive and unwavering tension, making it the ultimate tester for any venue's sound system!

Finally, ‘Exploration’ steps in a with an uplifting vigour and propulsive, rhythmic magnetism, rounding off the EP nicely with its feeling of freedom and completeness, leaving a sense of intrigue in readiness for their next instalment.

Lost In Ether | Podcast #84 | Abstract Man

Ahead of his much anticipated return to Corsica Studios with us on 28th April, we're delighted to bring you podcast #055 from VSK. He blew our minds at our November event with a powerful live performance in room one, followed by a 'lose your head' closing in room two, and we were still delighting in the effects as we locked in his return pretty much immediately after that! What draws us to this fiercely talented DJ and producer? The unique amalgamation of sound which for us stands him out - delving into a heavier, darker, often industrialised dimension through to a deeper, driving, hypnosis inducing one, across the board infused with the VSK panache he's becoming increasingly renowned for. There's no denying its exciting times for the Italian techno stallion, with his most recent EP due for release on 20th April on Tommy Four Seven's imprint, 47 - a solid statement of atomic energy depicting the power and purpose of VSK's sound and style, which he began communicating through live sets as recent as 2017.
