Calo Wood is an ongoing series of releases created by Tel Aviv producer Rejoicer & saxophonist Eyal Talmudi, in which every album is led by a different vocalist, while the two handle the beats. After a successful first release with Japanese singer Yuka they knew exactly who they wanted to be their new vocal lead - Israeli rising Ethiopian soulstress Ester Rada.

Like its predecessor, “Diving Shadows”, was born in the Israeli desert. Tel Aviv producer Rejoicer took a car full of gear and drove south to Ze’elim, a magical Kibbutz settled deep in the Negev desert, where he met with his good friend Eyal Talmudi.
They set up shop and started a non-stop recording session, taking inspiration from their surrounding landscape and jamming with local groove pioneers Kutiman (on synths) and Uri Kinorot (on guitar). After two days of making beats, they were joined by Rada, who had just come back from an international tour. On the same night of her arrival, they created 3 full songs. Three nights later, the album was complete.

The energy of this spontaneous meeting of minds, set to the serene backdrop of clear skies and bright sand dunes, is the core of this album. The creative freedom which seems to be found only when being far from the big city gave wings to these three artists to explore various musical territories; Hip Hop, Blues, Afrobeat, Ethiopian rhythms and R’n’B hooks all collide in this quiet desert storm. Rada jumps effortlessly between styles and languages, singing and rapping in English, Hebrew & Amharic about matters of the heart, mind & soul.

Rothschild 12 operated between 2009 and 2017 at the heart of Tel-Aviv, near the bustling intersection of Herzl street and Rothschild boulevard.
It has began as an art gallery and quickly became a popular relaxed café and bar. 
While its front terrace faced the hustle and bustle of the city’s main boulevard, in its back room Rothschild 12 hosted nightly live shows by a variety of established as well as up and coming independent musicians.

This musical summary of Rothschild 12 brings together a modern remix to a pioneering Israeli-Yemenite disco number from the seventies, a bundle of colourful and psychedelic beats, a gentle and well-polished pop tune, a song so frank it hurts that develops into a percussive devil's dance, and three tracks touched by poetry: a modern-electronic rendition to the groundbreaking work of an iconic Tel-Aviv poet; a spoken word piece based on lyrics by a renowned contemporary poet; and an electronic remix to a musician which has become one of the distinguished voices of Tel-Aviv's current younger generation. These gems were selected and combined together by Yotam Goldman, better known around town as DJ Yogo.

In Hour 2 we hand over to Rejoicer who released his debut album on Stones Throw, 'Energy Dreams' on 31st August. Rejoicer, a.k.a. Yuvi Havkin, is a musician and producer who splices together funk, hip-hop, breakbeats and jazz rhythms. He's is well-known for helping cultivate Israel’s modern beat movement, and for fostering a community of international artists who contribute to his Tel-Aviv based label, Raw Tapes. He had this to say about his mix;

Antlers - Crest (Tricky Remix)

“Flip Mode” is the second-single from Sefi Zisling, Tel Aviv’s top trumpeter sophomore album – ‘Expanse’. Inspired by Sun Ra’s use of abstract melodies on the jazz-fusion classic ‘Lanquidity’ – “Flip Mode” embraces the free-funk, creating a distinctive groove that allows the track to stand out from the rest of the record. 

“Flip Mode” follows the release of “Happy Solar Return ft. Kutiman”, a nine-minute afro-beat voyage that has been praised by Ruth Fisher, Tim Garcia (Jazz FM), Wo’Pop (KEXP), Somewhere Soul, Jazziz, Toshio Matsuura (Worldwide FM), Twistedsoul, Bandcamp Weekly, alongside being added to Spotify’s ‘State of Jazz’ playlist (380K + followers). Sefi Zisling has also curated a jazz mix for Worldwide FM and performed a full band session for Haaretz (one of Israel’s biggest newspaper).

Talking about the origin of “Flip Mode”, Sefi explains: “I have a lot of private slang with my friends, and “Flip Mode” is a catchphrase me and Layla [long-time collaborator] use a lot when talking to Uzi Ramirez, my beloved friend, guitar player on the album and an amazing musician on his own”.

Building on his debut LP ‘Beyond The Things I Know’, released on Raw Tapes Tel Aviv’s leading collective and championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music), Stamp The Wax and Bradley Zero (Rhythm Section/NTS) – ‘Expanse’ captures the essence of the classic jazz sessions; committed to the outcome, mistakes and spontaneous moments included and recorded collaboratively with all of Sefi’s close and talented friends. 

Inspired by his childhood heroes of John Coltrane, Grant Green and Fred Wesley, ‘Expanse’ combines the sounds of afro-jazz, psychedelic funk and spiritual jazz to create an album that echoes the great creators of Alice Coltrane, Fela Kuti and Donald Byrd, while paving a new path – all catalysed through the trumpet.

A stable to the Tel Aviv music scene, Sefi first started playing the trumpet at the mere age of ten, later enrolling in the prestigious art school Thelma Yellin. Performing in an array of bands since his early teens, Sefi has performed and recorded sessions with almost every key player of the jazz world in Israel. Mastering the art of trumpeting, Sefi has transcended his role as an instrumentalist on 'Expanse', evolving and expanding into a composer, producer and creative force to be reckoned with.
