Dark Day

A shrill alarm signal hammers its way louder and louder into the consciousness. Waking up from a dull dizziness and scanning the surroundings with cumbersome movements in the darkness, a display flickers when touching a smooth surface. "Cryo Capsule failure" could be read in distorted letters. 
The pale light of the display gave a glimpse of the confined space. Breathing seemed to become increasingly difficult and a queasy feeling spread unstoppably throughout the entire body. A mixture of fear and panic made the throbbing of one's own heart beat swell to a hammer that drowned out everything. 
Time seemed to draw to an agonizing eternity. Meanwhile the body trembled with the almost unbearable tension. Anger flared up deep inside and the hand clenched to the fist. In an act of madness, the pent-up force unleashed itself in a fanfare of blows against the inner wall of the cryocapsule.
Something gave way, a click was heard and followed by a soft hiss the air escaped from the narrow prison. The capsule opened slowly under the buzzing of the servomotors. Dry and cool air flowed into the interior of the capsule and the monotonous shouting of the alarm signal echoed from the walls.

The ‘Warpath’ LP from Maztek set a precedent and not just for him as an artist. It proved that independent figures can break out on their own and in doing so, can deliver cutting edge music through their own platform, garnering just as much support from the entire drum & bass as they would have done on a more mainstay imprint. And the ‘Warpath’ LP was also significant because of the fact that it was used to launch Maztek’s 0101 Records platform, which has since gone on to host many artists who are acting as pillars of the wider scene, bringing fresh sounds to the table and delivering the upfront music which has come under Maztek’s radar.
It’s these same artists who are about to take the ‘Warpath’ LP into another dimension, drawing from its original track list and offering their own versions of Maztek’s production. From the hectic world of Merikan, who draws for his signature through his rework of ‘The Dirt’, through the take on Maztek’s ‘Come Closer’ by Insomniax, there’s a range of producers who are brought into the fray to present the album from their own worlds. Trio Inward, Hanzo and Randie get their hands on collaboration ‘Gladiators’ featuring Gridlok, whilst ‘Pandemonium’ is given the VIP treatment by Maztek. Disprove follows in quick succession with his twist on the title-track alongside Ben Verse. Korsakov stalwart Droptek draws ‘It’s On’ with Virus Syndicate into his own sonic landscape and historic drum & bass figure Optiv introduces listeners to his reimagining of ‘What You Got’. MC Mota’s vocals are taken into a new frame by Synth Ethics with ‘The Breaker’ and Kiril then has his turn on Maztek & Aeph’s ‘Trajectory’. Up next, relative newcomer Phonetick gives a more lumbering motion to ‘Electronic Warfare’, keeping the same chaotic bass riffs as the original with Redpill and Maztek’s expert manufacturing.
For one final time on 0101 Records, Signs remixes ‘Cheeky Dub’ and highlights why they were such a formidable force before their split. Then RedPill makes another appearance although this time through his own rendition of ‘Shake the Foundation’. Then before the appearance of Insomniax, Current Value delivers his manic patches of synthesis across ‘Timeless’.
As the remix album closes, it signifies just how far Maztek has come as a producer. From his beginnings on some of the most pivotal labels, through to setting up his own, he’s made his mark. With the team he now has at his fingertips, he proves this is something which will continue years from the creation of 0101 Records.

Next up on the Addictive Behaviour imprint is a continuation EP, celebrating the diverse production prowess of Wreckless & friends once again, this time enlisting support from Necrobia & Conscience. Following on from his Simulacra release last year with Necrobia & Sweetpea, Simulacra & Simulation is a concept based around altered perceptions, alternative realities and being removed from the world as we know it by technology. 

This follow up EP consists of four deadly cuts each purveying their own mystifyingly dark undercurrents and each production nodding back to nostalgic inspirations whilst still remaining future fresh. ‘Alienware’ opens up with a damaging assault of contorted snarls and cutting drums. ‘Don’t Care’ switches it up, raining down a mood evoking bass fuelled roller. Following this is the steppy inertia and intricate breaks of ‘Blank’. And rounding it all off is the timeless and unrelenting gritty sounds of ‘Cleanse’.

This 2nd part to the series is an onslaught of tense, captivating and stand-out tracks which you can really take your pick of. A solid collection and addition to anyone’s playlist that continues to deliver the message, urging you to take off the filter, put down the phone and just listen to the raw original music.

Standing behind the decks since 2014, Violet constantly widen her activities in the drum and bass scene, whether as promoter of the legendary „Therapy Sessions“ in Hamburg or by co-founding her own label „Insomnius Music“ (@insomnius-music). As if this wasn't enough, she's also enhancing her own productions as a part of the producer & DJ duo „Scary Woods“ (@scarywoods) and under her own Alias. 

In this nearly 2-hours long journey through all facettes of dark dnb, „Violet Core" delivers a intriguing reflection of her own musical vision. From trueskool to crossbreed, from classics to modern neurofunk, this mix provides a vast variety of styles, while still retaining a thread. Own productions and some unreleased material from both of her projects aren't missing either.
