S06E10 - A Pharmacist’s Guide to Holistic Fertility and Motherhood with Katie Wood

Hello everyone, I’m super excited to release this next episode that was recorded at the start of this year. We covered so many topics near and dear to my personal and professional mission and I’m so honored to introduce my next guest and what he is contributing to healthcare.

Dr. Rohit Moghe is an ambulatory care & population health clinical pharmacist for accountable care organization (ACO) at Trinity Health Mid-Atlantic. He is originally from the Philadelphia area. Dr. Moghe is a residency-training pharmacist with a master's in public health and a certified diabetes care & education specialist with over 22 years of experience across various therapeutic areas and whole continuum of care. Dr. Moghe is active in leadership at both Association of Diabetes Care & Education Specialists as well as American College of Lifestyle Medicine as Co-Chair of the pharmacist group.

His diverse professional and life experience has led him to understand that most chronic conditions don't need to be managed with medications. However, if we must use them, we should be delivering comprehensive medication management (CMM) and get paid for the work that we do. His specialty is deprescribing medications, BUT, if they are to be ramped down, we must ramp up people's lifestyle. He uses the six pillars of lifestyle medicine: nutrition, enjoyable physical activity, restful sleep, addressing stress, reducing risky behaviors (& substances), and positive social connections. The stuff we should all optimize, but always pay enough attention to it. He focuses a lot on coaching his patients and clients through change.

He is also a 200-hr yoga teacher registered through the Yoga Alliance and  practices many forms of meditation and deep breathing exercises. Having grown up in yoga since an early age, application of Ayurvedic principles in his lifestyle come naturally to him, including appropriate use of herbal and natural remedies.

S06E11 - Holistic Support for Population Health through Intrapreneurship with Dr. Rohit Moghe

Today I talk with a fellow pharmacist who became a patient going through our healthcare system, desperate for answers and having to advocate for herself from the other side of the treatment counter. We discuss what it takes to stay healthy in today’s post-COVID world when so much remains shrouded in mystery, and yet going back to the basics of self-care can still make a difference.

Long-COVID symptoms are very real and affect a significant part of the population. As healthcare providers it behooves us to gain a general understanding of the disease so we can be there for our patients and provide them with symptom mitigation strategies.

Salam Kabbani is an infectious diseases pharmacy specialist at Olathe Medical Center. She graduated with her doctor of pharmacy degree from California Health Sciences University in 2019 and then went on to complete a PGY1 pharmacy residency at Cleveland Clinic South Pointe hospital. Despite being fully vaccinated at the time, she had a breakthrough COVID infection with the delta variant in August of 2021 which was then followed by a long-COVID journey. 

Becoming disabled changed her life in so many ways both good and bad, and she decided to write a memoir detailing her long-COVID journey to raise awareness about the condition, and most importantly to let other long-haulers know that they are not alone and they matter. She is now proudly a patient advocate and believes in spreading empathy through honest and open communication. Her book “COVID Long-Hauler: My Life Since COVID” is available in print, ePub, and audiobook and can be found on Amazon.

S06E19 - Freedom From Pharma with Dr. Jen VanDeWater, PharmD

Greetings, dear listeners. I hope you had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving to start this holiday season. For me it’s always a great reminder of counting one’s blessings, not only seasonally but having a dedicated gratitude practice. Now without further ado I’d like to introduce my next guest, with whom I share a mission to optimize your health in order to maximize your wellbeing. As working moms, we are all too familiar with the need to be superhumans - raising kids, taking care of families, and managing professional careers. 

I had a fascinating conversation full of similarities with Stephanie Smith, PharmD, CHC, who coaches moms to prioritize their wellness by tuning into their own bodies, by resting and refueling, and by building endurance through exercise and movement. 

After obtaining her Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, Stephanie began working with Pfizer as a medical education consultant. As her clinical experience grew, she eventually moved into a more patient centered practice at Mount Sinai Medical Center before assuming another teaching role in the Pharmacy Practice Residency at Temple University Hospital. During the near decade at Temple,she provided direct patient care in the surgical/trauma critical care unit and worked as part of a multi-disciplinary team, as well as mentored/precepted pharmacy students and residents, and served as adjunct faculty for Temple. 

During this time Stephanie saw countless patients getting acutely better but struggling with multiple chronic diseases and the endless medication list that goes along with it. She began to truly understand the roles that diet and exercise play in the trajectory of health inside and out of the hospital. Her own health began to change as well. It was through her own personal experiences with Crohn’s Disease and Hashimoto's Thyroiditis that it became clear just how challenging it can be to live with chronic illness and more importantly, how rewarding it is to defeat them through healthy lifestyle choices and practices. 

As Stephanie’s health grew, so too did her family, and she learned firsthand the obstacles that other women face as her role expanded to spouse and mother of two beautiful daughters. These new responsibilities forced her to reconcile and realign her identity and passions. She left clinical practice to pursue a career in health coaching and functional medicine. This was the change that ultimately gave rise to Master Her Health, her business that applies a background of traditional western medicine and pharmacy to an integrative program incorporating natural diet, exercise and rest techniques to build a community of healthy and strong moms across the country.

Long story short, Stephanie transforms women from hungry, stressed, and tired to fit, confident, and healthy.

Hey everyone, I’m back this week with a very special guest and fellow podcaster, who is passionate about promoting the pharmacy profession and transforming healthcare. She is the founder of Talk to Your Pharmacist, which has over 250 episodes highlighting successful pharmacy leaders and sharing about current healthcare trends. I’m so excited to introduce Dr. Hillary Blackburn, PharmD, MBA, a clinically and business-trained pharmacist having practiced for over a decade in a variety of healthcare settings. She has experience in healthcare strategy, business development, formulary development and management, consulting, and establishing successful medication access programs. In her current role, she serves as Chief Pharmacy Officer at Dispensary of Hope, a national non-profit medication distributor hosted by Ascension where she oversees the formulary, leads research initiatives, and manages two networks of pharmacist strategic advisors.

Dr. Blackburn was selected to serve on the American Pharmacists Association's (APhA) - APPM Executive Committee for 2021-2023 and invited to serve on the Foundation's Women in Pharmacy Committee. Additionally, she has served as Co-Chair for the Advocacy Committee for APhA's Care of the Underserved Special Interest Group and as a member on the Membership Engagement and Legislative and Policy committees for the Tennessee Pharmacist Association. She precepts student pharmacists from several colleges and serves on the Belmont University College of Pharmacy Dean's External Advisory Committee. Hillary is a graduate of the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and completed a PGY1 Pharmacy Practice Residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

In 2012, Hillary returned to her Tennessee roots and met her wonderful husband, Chad, in Nashville where she enjoys staying involved in her community through volunteering, living an active lifestyle, traveling, spending time with friends and family, and their two children.

Heather Hardin received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Florida in 2005 and is a Board-Certified Ambulatory Care Specialist. After working as a community pharmacist, Dr Hardin became a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Florida College of Pharmacy from 2010 to 2018.

Heather currently owns her own health and wellness company, Halo Health Services, where she helps clients find more natural ways to address the root causes of their health concerns, decreasing dependence on prescription medications. She works to identify and address the root cause of conditions instead of merely treating the symptoms.

S07E05 - Why Nutrition Plays a Vital role in Your Digital Wellness Practices with Kylen Ribeiro

It’s true what the forefather of modern medicine said about disease originating in the gut. Following in Hippocrates’s footsteps, my podcast guest will be sharing how fixing your gut health can and will help fix any other issues you may have.

Dr. Loredana Marzullo Shapson, PharmD, FNTP is the founder of LifeMod Solutions, a holistic health practice in Newtown, PA. Today’s guest, Mark A. Smith began his career as a Special Agent with the FBI working on organized and white-collar crime. Followed by a Human Resources path from Pfizer, to PepsiCo, and ending as CHRO with Blockbuster Entertainment. Following an acquisition Mark returned to Western New York where he became actively involved in Children’s Behavioral Health at both the state and national level. 

Mark’s passion is focused on the clinical and economic value of Pharmacogenomics (PGx), and has placed him in the center of the national drive to “Standard of Care” for PGx. His network in autism, genetics, rare conditions, healthcare systems and payers positions him as an influential individual in the “fixing” of the American healthcare system.

Growing up in Nigeria, she would see her grandmother using herbs as part of her holistic healing process. This memory sparked her interest and curiosity for integrative health.

After moving to the United States at age 7, she majored in Chemistry at Morgan State University and went on to attain her doctor of pharmacy degree at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She has 11+ years of experience in the healthcare field and is also a board-certified Pharmacotherapy Specialist, with emphasis on direct patient care, medication therapy management and optimization.

When Dr. OG is not at the hospital fighting bugs with drugs, she’s working in her small business, Ayoni Wellness (Ayoniwellness.com), where she handcrafts botanical skin & body care products with the help of plant allies. The age-old Hippocratic saying that all disease begins in the gut is proven time and time again in practice. It is one of the greatest legacies that he bestowed upon the medical field, along with the Hippocratic oath to “do no harm.” So today, my guest and I will explore how the gut can have a hand in every disease state, and also can be a therapeutic target to promote health.

Dr. Inna Melamed is a Doctor of Pharmacy, a functional medicine practitioner, an expert in gut and hormone health, and a Crohn’s patient in remission. Her career started as a traditional pharmacist and her mission later became to heal herself and help others with chronic gut and hormone problems.

She became certified in functional medicine clinical training with Dr. Daniel Kalish. In December of 2017 she earned her PharmD (Doctor of Pharmacy) degree from one of the top pharmacy schools in the U.S., University of Florida, graduating cum laude, to broaden her clinical knowledge and incorporate that into her functional medicine practice.

Since opening her practice, Real Health Solutions, she has helped thousands of clients with their IBD (inflammatory bowel disease), digestive problems, hormone imbalances, and other chronic conditions that could not have been resolved by traditional medicine alone.
