Strange Interactions is a DJ/producer-duo, label and party based in Naarm co-founded by Margarita Bassova (RITA BASS) and Yang Chen (Yangos) in 2021.  

As a DJ-duo the pair have two aliases: Strange Interactions and Strange Attractions. As Strange Interactions they manoeuvre the darker side of underground electronic music ranging from drum and bass to dubstep, UK bass to IDM and all the dark and murky corners in-between. As Strange Attractions they play with lighter sounds they love, with a particularly affinity for left-field house, chubby electro and jazz. 

The label focuses on uplifting female and GNC acts in the music industry, giving creatives the space to share their creativity both locally and eventually globally. SI is also very interested in an artists intention behind their creation, and have a particular fondness for lifting artists who share a strong purpose whether it be sociopolitical, philosophical, personal or emotional. The first release on the label is set for May 5th this year.

Normally a New Moon is in a different sign each month, this month we have 2 New Moons in Cancer (20th June at 0% and 21st July at 28%, so beginning and end of Cancer). 
So Cancer of Home, security and ancestors, is asking us to try AGAIN! New start AGAIN! 
We are so tired of feeling insecure, where is our soul home?! 
Cancer has been highlighted for over 18 months. After North Node of the Moon being there since early 2019, shining a light on our direction with nurturing and home. 
Then Cancer season through June/July in the middle of Eclipse season And Summer Solstice?! Crazy intensity- you know it! 
Cancer is still battling it out in opposition with Capricorn, where all the big players are in Retrograde- Saturn, Jupiter and Pluto. They want us to learn our lessons no matter how painful! 
Cancer bathes our wounds and wants to hold us safe at home. 

For this show, I treated it as my own therapy. 
These times have been difficult and at times dark. Allowing thoughts and energies to reach you deeply is important to understand and be at peace with our innerselves. 
I hope you enjoy the journey and get to heal deeply together.

NTS CANCER NEW MOON ECLIPSE JULY 2020

In these dark times of Covid we still have our music.  We have the sounds to soothe us, distract and take our minds away from the chaos and uncertainty.   
We can't dance like we used to but we can hear and feel. Our release must be found in another way, we must look within. We find solace and grant ourselves space and time in the music. 
   
Sam McQueen (Indio co-producer with John Beltran, Indigo Aera, Delsin Records, Furthur Electronix) presents his debut album Dreams In Sepia for Mojuba sub label a.r.t.less and hits us with a real time soundscape of the moment, an epic-like document of these times. The rhythms are subtle, sometimes broken, the time structures often complex, this is not primarily dance floor orientated music. These sounds are way more cerebral, for the heads. They reflect perfectly the complexities of life we are experiencing in 2020. 

The edges are rounded with occasional strolling bass lines and comfy chords. Slabs of keys and spaced out female vocals like a psychedelic journey that scares you at first yet comforts you soon after. Sam McQueen’s mediatory sounds give an overwhelming sense of the moment. The music makes you take time out and listen. Its purposeful manner suggests there are more hours in the day, like time slowing down a pause, like the sun slithering slowly behind the horizon. These are sunset sounds for dark back-rooms. 

Daytime or night, it works. This is the soundtrack for the other room, the deeper sounds not designed to make you dance. This music doesn’t get in your face, it creeps up and smacks you on the ass. There are elements of early nineties UK Techno, a warmth and delicateness that pervades a distinct lack of four four dance floor in the beat structures, a softer tone throughout than the harder Detroit techno sounds of the same era but still nods and acknowledgements to the D in the layout and way the sounds present themselves. Think John Beltran, Symbols and Instruments, Black Dog or Kirk DeGiorgio, mid 90s Berlin sounds from Basic Channel / Rhythm & Sound, but in lockdown. Music for today's modern lacking landscape. The sounds often familiar, analogue, the drums, hi hats and snares, shimmer,  jazz style. They accentuate and push the rest of the elements around them.  
 In a bygone era this would be crudely classed as Chill Out music. In 2020 Covid era its about how it makes you feel as you relax and really listen to it. It is about emotion and empathy, a oneness, a new unknown and a deeper train of thought for the listener. Much like 2020, Sam McQueen lays the pieces round the edge of the jigsaw and lets you fill in the rest.

“When I moved to Berlin in 2015, coming from a hip hop and jazz background, club music and culture felt extremely far from me and to be honest, at the time, I would’ve never thought I’d ever be into techno or electronic music in general. 

And here’s me, 5 years later, a proper raver. I fell in love with those sounds and with the new world that opened its doors to me. 

I slowly started collecting dance music records, although to this day it is quite a challenge to play them, being used to playing mostly hip hop and disco-adjacent music and being a big fan of tight cuts. 

But I am so happy to present you this vinyl mix today made from the records that initiated the birth of my rave collection. I’d describe the mix as “a pallet of dance floor feelings I experienced”... maybe mixed a bit roughly at times, but each track played truly and with all my heart. This is me being thrown into the unknown and becoming instantly addicted to it.

P.S. I miss the dance floor and its community."

“For our 1st show of the year we’d like to welcome OA team member, Aleks to the airwaves.
Aleks released his first album “Pool Daze” on OA back in 17, 9 deep hardware cuts, and 2 powerful HVL remixes.
He then continued his journey with labels such as Natural Sciences, Deeptrax and his own imprint, Lonely Planet, where he’s just finished producing a new album, from “space with love”, out later this year.
For today’s show Aleks worked on a mighty 2 hr set, the first hour of which is A deep techno & knackered house DJ set; the 2nd part he has prepared live set packed with his signature sounds built around analogue gear, degraded tape & distortion pedals.
