These are a collection of tracks over the past few months, both celebratory and reflective. I’ve managed to succeed in a leap of faith in my professional life and accomplished something that for a long time I didn’t think was possible for me to accomplish. After a painstaking ten or so years of doubting myself and limiting my potential, I’ve managed to be called to the bar and have been working as a lawyer for the past two months. I touch upon what that meant to me in a few tracks here.

I also reflect on the journey I’ve been on since 2008 or maybe since 2012, how life changed so dramatically but spurned me on to put effort into a passion that might never have kindled if not for these traumatic, life-altering but possibly needed events. The pursuit of both my passion and my career has dictated my life immensely, and though some things I never thought likely to happen came true, I realize perhaps the journey really is part of the joy rather than simply reaching the destination. 

Though this project is another haphazard collection of tracks over an extended period of time, these set of tracks are some of my best work so far, and I am immensely proud of the progress I’ve made this year, both musically and professionally. 

Have I reached the fulfillment of all of my goals? No. Not yet. Can we give ourselves credit for the progress we’ve made so far, even if we’re not exactly where we would like to be? Yes. I think so.

A little EP

The title I guess can mean two things. 

One, we’re all on the same road, that same journey called life, but walking in different shoes. The roads we take share similarities in terms of emotions and general feelings, but the way we experience these, the different causes that bring us to where we are might be slightly different, and our own individual experiences, our “shoes” are different. We all experience love, meaning, purpose, light, grief, sorrow, exhaustion, pain, but the difference is in perhaps how we perceive these, or how we identify with them in our own unique ways. Same road, same journey of life, same range of emotions, but different shoes, different personalities and cause of our emotions.

The other meaning is a more personal one. I’ve experienced tremendous growth these past two years. I’ve moved across the country to a town that I had never even heard of before deciding to move here. I’ve completed my apprenticeship to become a lawyer. I passed the Bar exams, got called to the Bar, and began working as a lawyer. I’ve released three full length projects whilst doing all that too, pushed the music more than ever and continue to grow and experiment as an artist. However, despite all of that, I’m still the same person I’ve always been. I’ve bought new shoes, but the road I’m on seems to be the same road as before, with the same personal struggles that I can’t seem to fully shake off. But, if you listen to this short four track EP, you’ll notice I’m speaking from a more optimistic point of view. I’m talking about coming back from hardship with a rebound, I’m talking about seeking freedom despite the struggles we face, I’m talking about gratitude, and last but not least, I’m talking about persistence. So even though I’m still on the same road, still facing the same old challenges, and maybe even some new ones, the shoes I’m wearing, the way I’m walking this road, that is new.

Same Road, Different Shoes (EP)

This weekend I sat down with the intention of recording a full EP from start to finish, something I never intentionally sat down to do before. I copped a bunch of beats from ARVM beats and started writing Friday night. By Sunday evening I had this collection of five tracks, all wrapped up under the title “A Window To You”.

What I mean by the title is that art is a reflection of the self. Sometimes we’ll hear a song and get a completely different message than what the artist intended because what we hear gets interpreted through our own experiences at that point. What I loosely aim to do with these tracks is try to reflect myself in you, through shared experiences that you might (or might not) relate to and state that art might not be able to save us, but it can reflect the world we live in if done properly.

I don’t know if I succeeded in imparting that message, but all I know is I’m content with what I set out to do.
