On-going debate asks whether music can convey meaning, and if it can, how does it? Of course, these arguments devolve into semantics. What do we mean by meaning? Leaving conundrums aside, the question of “meaning” in music, as we commonly understand that word, fascinates me.

This piece wonders how meaning is made, especially as posed by Noam Chomsky’s now famous sentence, “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.” He purposely constructed that nonsensical sentence to research how we make meaning in things—even things intentionally devoid of meaning. Absolute music is an example. The composer intends it to be contemplated as pure music, as artistic abstraction without rational meaning, but I’m not sure that’s possible.

As Chomsky’s research showed, we seem compelled to discover or make meaning, intended or not. When we read Chomsky’s sentence, we can’t resist trying to figure out what it means. Is it emotional meaning as in a poem? Are “Colorless green ideas” and “sleep furiously” metaphors. perhaps for unresolved theories struggling for completion? Even from nonsense, we try to make meaning. It seems that besides meaning in the rational sense, e.g. the futility of war, or love conquers all, we also understand emotional or supra-rational meaning. “I don’t know what that piece is supposed say, but it really means something to me.”

  Even when a composer intends meaning, explicitly or implicitly, it seems to be no more valid or meaningful than what a listener may find—or invent. We may clearly understand what the composer intends to communicate from a program note or the music itself, but we aren’t simply receiving that information. Our minds compare, relate, and otherwise contemplate the music in many ways. Whatever the composer may have to say about it is only one of many aspects to which we respond and that determine whatever meaning we may or may not find.

As Chomsky’s sentence demonstrates so clearly, meaning is not solely conveyed by the composer’s intention. As listeners, we make it. Like composing, listening is a creative act.

The Dance
  A Maker in a sidewalk workshop builds various abstract objects and stands them outside, never interacting with passersby who enter singly and interact with each other in pairs or groups as they agree and disagree about the purpose or use of the objects. Social hierarchy, hubris, grief, sex, mysticism, etc. animate the dancers:
  A Maker who calmly, but fastidiously makes abstract objects, e.g. a pillar, an open triangle, a tall rectangular frame, etc.
  A naive and very curious Young Woman.
  A constantly confused and nearly naked Holy Man of unidentifiable origin and denomination.
  A middle-aged and harried Business Woman.
  A slick and overly confident Venture Capitalist.
  An irascible, but practically minded Bum.
  A sad young Genius whose great intellect always leads him back to where he began.
  After most have exited in frustration or confusion, the Maker sits down with his lunch box and thermos and eats his lunch, oblivious to the remaining dancers trapped in, or struggling with things he’s made.

I was asked by Chris (@nu-ionmusic) if I can sing this song for him about a week ago but because of the accident with my son I didn't really have much time for collaborations. So, today I got some time to sing some collabs but  saw a lovely version sung by @emma-shanley :). I asked Chris if he still wants me to sing another version of the same song and got his approval. So here it is, something unusual for me :)

When Andreas (http://soundcloud.com/Shoemansky) wrote me and asked if I am open for a collaboration it was like a big "wow" cause I'm a huge fan of his songs! So we chose the motif of one of my piano improvisations for the start (http://soundcloud.com/milanazilnik/on-the-other-side-milana) and used the words I wrote myself when I was thinking to turn that impro into a song. And here is the result :)

Running on a Dark Meadow - Milana Zilnik (composer, pianist),  Ray McGinnis (producer, arranger)

Playing piano since I was four and studied in a musical school for ten years. Though, I always felt that playing by notes and singing in a choir is not enough to become a musician. I needed to be able to play anything I want by ear so, by starting improvising, I've found my own style of playing. When I teach children to play piano or sing, I offer them improvisation right from the beginning. I wish I was taught that way, since until my mid-30s I had hard times to relax and believe in my ability to create my own music. Twelve years ago my husband (@arty-sandler) finally convinced me to record some of my improvisations and we opened this account on SoundCloud - it happened in July, 2012.

You won't find a single particular genre on my cloud: my musical tastes are rather eclectic. Jazz and soft rock are my favorites but I also play blues, classical, folk, middle-eastern, New Age, ambient and others. Piano and vocal are my main instruments but together with my husband we also experiment a lot with different arrangements and orchestrations. 

When we started uploading our music to SoundCloud back in 2012, it was first shy attempts to record my improvisations straight from a keyboard. Many things have evolved since then. Over the years we've grown into a professional recording and composing studio, with a conservatory grand piano in an acoustically treated room and a bunch of microphones and other recording equipment. We scored a few documentaries, short films and animations. This year my orchestral and piano solo works were performed by Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra for Bryan Arias’s ballet show based on “The Little Prince” story. We've published three books with my original scores for solo piano and released twenty original full-length albums (solo piano, multi-instrumental and original songs in various genres) and numerous singles that have been streamed over 70 million times across multiple platforms.

I am a hobbyist composer and songwriter born in the deep south of the USA.  Back in the olden days of yore, I was an oboist, bass player and recording engineer..  That gave way to my second love, science and engineering.  I now program computers by day and play music as a hobby in my spare time.  I love music!  I love to listen to it , play it and attempt to write it.  To me music is all about having fun!

Since joining SoundCloud I have found a wealth of talent that has just amazed me.  It has been refreshing because of the garbage record company suits are trying to feed us all.
