Those of you that feel that salsa has become somewhat stagnant or formulaic, well here is just the antidote. Singer Ray Viera (former coroista for Eddie Palmieri) has released his third release, and folks, it's a smoker. 
Viera's Trombao orchestra is reminiscent of some of the most memorable material of the famed Alegre All Stars. And, like the All Stars (both Alegre and Fania, in fact), Viera likes his band to stretch out and jam. This is most evident in his Descarga Esclavitud Moderna ...an amazing ride that only can only happen when you get all the musicians in the same room and hit the "record" button. That's just how Sambumbia Radioactiva was done. Viera thought is was important for the musicians to react to each other in real time, like a "live" performance. And this quality comes through, big time. 
While Viera clearly embraces classic salsa's jazzy, groove-driven, roots, he adds lots of flavors to the mix. Listen to his pan-Caribbean party-ready Experimento En Optimismo, one of my favorite tracks on the album. It's a rhythm machine. But there are many favorites here. 
Casanova y Su Son is an ernest tip of the hat to the savory son-guajira style that features none other than el maestro Johnny Pacheco on flute. Boom! There are other guests that I'll mention in a bit. First let me give props to the arrangers of Viera's all original compositions: Sonny Bravo, Jose M Lugo, Edwin Sanchez, Jose Madera, Willie Ruiz and Marty Sheller. Wow! 
Listen to the track Carta La Mama to get a sense of the intensity provided by the trombonists, including guest number two, Jimmy Bosch. Ok, guests: In addition to Pacheco and Bosch, Viera enlisted singer Herman Olivera, trombonist Reynaldo Jorge, percussionist "Pequeño" Johnny Rivero, Edwin Sanchez on the Fender Rhodes piano, and timbalero Pablo “Chino” Nuñez. 
Peppered with "skits" that satirize commercial radio and concert masters of ceremony, Viera clearly has a well developed sense of humor that he's not afraid to incorporate. It's a nice touch that reminds us not to take anything too seriously... we're here to have some fun as well as to dance to the killer dance grooves. In this respect, it again links back to the Alegre All Stars, where humor was an element of the sessions.
