LOS ANGELES TIMES: BUZZ BANDS March 10th, - Wrapped in Rayon| Kevin Bronson: Though the name suggests Ensign's trio sounds synthetic, Rayon is anything but. With the frontman's flanged vocals poking through lush guitars, Rayon's music seems as organic as an ocean swell. "We're still trying to define" the sound, Ensign says, "but I love layers, even if it's just to experiment. Layers of strings, layers of guitars ... Since James Abbott aka Walter Ensign formed RAYON in 2003, the band has steadily built a growing legion of fans outside the internet social world is drawn to its incredibly layered and hypnotic sound from their concerts. While the instrumentation is unique, it clearly has its roots in the sounds of iconic English rockers ranging from Donovan Echo & The Bunnymen to Joy Division, Built to Spills, Pink Floyd with a bit of The Who thrown in for good measure. In fact, it was Echo & The Bunnymen guitarist Will Sergeant who suggested the name RAYON while he and Walter were back stage following an Echo concert, James liked the sound of it, and the name stuck.

James has been seen playing with different musicians to accompanying him for shows and in 2004, James took his band of thugs to his downtown rehearsal studio where they recorded a number of rough live recordings, (demos) which can be heard on Rayon's first self-produced five song EP titled, "Blow Away" along with the late Brian Keats former Misfits Drummer who also played in Abbott's former band Tramdriver and Rayon, died  from a battle with cancer during the making of Rayon's debut record called "Shouting Voice" Rayon recorded 12 songs in 2007 with Brian Damage Keats at John Avila's studio from Oingo Boingo, but this album was never released after the passing of Brian.

Until 2018 that all changed, James went to his storage and found a chest full of Masters recordings of over 240 songs from his start in writing music to the making of "shouting voice"  After a very long break James Abbott is back with new songs and in the process working on the completion of  "Shouting Voice" which you can hear on the song "Don't Worry" Keith Morris from the Circle Jerks, Black Flag and OFF, singing backups and John Avila's studio from Oingo Boingo on the new recording of the song "Don't Worry" The EP "Blow Away" received significant airplay and tracks from "Blow Away" were also featured in the film "The Job" starring Daryl Hannah, as well as the made-for TV movie "The Hollow" Starring Kaley Cuoco. Rayon has been reviewed by numerous magazines and newspapers. Including the Los Angeles Times (Buzz Bands column) Under the Radar, Campus Circle, Las Vegas Journal, Pasadena Weekly, killradio interview (is good) and more.

CAMPUS CIRCLE: 
IT'S RARE TO SHOW UP TO A GIG with more than one band on the bill and not be bored to tears by the first act. Once or twice, in my hundreds of shows attended, an opening band has actually horrified me. The 
potential to be totally blown away by the opener is infinitely smaller, but on 
March 10 at the Galaxy in Santa Ana, Rayon accomplished just that.
