A master of the keys and the sax, Horace played alongside Miles Davis on a number of legendary albums, and he passed away June 18th, 2014.

Saxophonist John Coltrane was one of the most seminal saxophonists to emerge in the post-war years, and is still one of the central figures in history of jazz. More than forty years after his death his playing and composing continues to resonate throughout contemporary music. This collection concentrates on the excellent music he recorded as leader during the 1950’s, and has been carefully re-mastered, allowing you to hear Coltrane’s work in new and un-paralleled sound quality.

John Coltrane - Blue Train (From The Rough Guide To John Coltrane)

Memphis Soul Stew was a 1967 single by the great saxman King Curtis. By introducing the instruments one by one, it famously shows how the classic Memphis sound was built up.

It also happens to be fantastic to dance to. Except for one thing. At 2 minutes and 55 seconds long the single is too short. Every time the fade hits, just when the band is in ecstatic overdrive, I want it to keep going. So one day I put the song into my favourite sonic software and made a few cunning edits that extend it by almost a minute to 3.47, long enough to get some serious rocks off.

Play loud - and mind the furniture.
