Glasgow’s disco godfather, the almighty Al Kent, has delivered three eclectic masterpieces, due to take the international dancefloors to a further level of musical consciousness. A further pack of deep dug bombs that confront the functionality in music many labels have always strived for. The A Side keeps every imaginable sound system busy with a drifty percussive harvester adorned with an eclectic instrumentation that splits flesh from bones and mind from soul. “Colder Than Cold” on the B Side is a perfect example of how a dancefloor should sound like. A project that’s been in the works since his label debut back in 2017, the “Cody Currie EP” is a refined statement of the rising star producer’s UK-jazz and club roots, both danceable and introspective. Enlisting a talented roster of collaborators, such as vocalists Stee Downes, RNT mainstay Cor.ece, and newcomer Marlena Dae as well as instrumentalists Mikeal and Ally McMahon, each track is like a little world of its own in the universe of Cody’s vast musical aesthetic. To round out the EP we have a stellar remix from European deep house royalty Vincenzo, who shows that his production tools are still sharp as ever.

Ever since Darryl and I began our walks, the topics of conversations shifted. Gone were the endless dissections of records, samples and breakbeats. Our thoughts were suddenly occupied with the music we could hear in nature. Darryl could talk for hours about the different rhythms she could feel in the swaying of trees, about harmonies hidden in the silent hum of the forest, melodies the wind played as it blew through the ragged rocks. Sometimes, in the high summer when the ancient forests were full of birds singing, and buzzing with bees and the trees were crackling in the heat, I was almost worried there was too much for her to take in. “How do you decide what to listen to? Which pattern out of those hundreds and thousands around you is right?” I asked her once. “We should never look for the brightest light, nor should we try to sing the loudest sound,” she replied. “We should instead try to experience the moment of perfect stillness between two flaps of a bird’s wings; hear that utter silence between lightning and thunder. That is when the universe reveals its deepest secrets and even the impossible will blossom, like a flower out of a stone.”
