For their first ever double-LP outing Razor-N-Tape presents POOLS, with a sun-drenched and laid-back collection of tunes called Innertubes. POOLS, the moniker of Los Angeles duo Thee Mike Bee and DJ Morsecode, craft a sound that conjures up the easy going swagger and soulful grit of the left-most coast. The first two sides of original versions read like an album, perfect for a lazy Sunday rooftop BBQ with beers, bros and blunts, (although no doubt some of these gems will find their way into DJs' warm-up and boom-bap sets). Sides C & D elevate the juncture to dance floor level, with smooth and varied remixes from RNT stalwarts Luvless and DJ Vas, plus label newcomers thatmanmonkz and Junktion.

The crew had gathered amidst the sprawling estate. The smoke flourished high up above as it escaped from the heat of the grill. The smell of meat lingered in the air as the warm rays shone down upon them. Many beers would be drank this day, many memories shared. Music blasted from the boombox sat upon the grass. A barbeque skit played loud. 
Here is the latest EP to emerge from the Tartelet Records camp. It sees Kickflip Mike and Julius Conrad deliver a four track EP built for the summer.

Finally, the battle is about to reach its thrilling finale after three exhausting rounds. Our pugilists are staggering on their feet and the bookies are running around frantically, taking the final bets. Will the Bad Guys suckerpunch the Good Guys into oblivion, or does team Good have an epic deathmove in store for its malevolent adversaries?

Amsterdam native Nachtbraker steps back into the arena for the fourth chapter in the saga. The Quartet Series label boss and Heist and Dirt Crew mainstay has defected to the bright and sunny Good Guys. Piano chords, chopper effects and toms are the main ingredients of his funk-laden and groovy energy drink. Better than steroids they say. Laurence Guy (Church, Rose Records) joins forces – or heads in this particular case with a much-needed supplement that tugs on your heartstrings with its lush keys and deep pads. This London lad has been stirring up the scene with his flawless and addictive chords, not to mention the big support he’s getting from maestro Move D.

Will this dapper duo be strong enough to floor the misfits featured on the flip? Great precaution is imperative with two heavyweights in the other corner. First mr. Tommy Vicari Jnr (Cabinet Records, YAY Recordings, AMMO84) comes barging in. This Sheffield veteran has been making killer cuts for years now and is about to step into the ring with his slamming snares, and wonkly wobbly bassline swinging around a phat kick. To keep both The Bad Guys feet on the ground LK (Shall not Fade, Hokkaido Dance Club) adds some extra meat with a deep, heavy bassgroove, while a sexy vocal and steady chords create that gangsta vibe that will boost the Bad Guys’ confidence.

One of Australia’s most promising jazz-centric labels is offering a tasting plate of its 2020 artists and we’re pretty excited to share with you a quality premiere track to spread the good word. Melbourne label La Sape has compiled seven original tracks from seven Aussie acts for its seventh release, downundaground. Throughout 2020, releases from each act will hit the internet via La Sape.

This is an eclectic mix. Musical director and label mainstay Horatio Luna (whose music we’ve premiered before) and label boss Kurt Paradise have pulled together sounds from the periphery of that which lies under the wide musical umbrella of ‘jazz’. From the slow and dreamy opener by Astral Flex to Proto Moro’s driving, psychedelic, 4x4-rhythms, the variety is broad and musicality deep. Live instrumentation, improvisation and jazz are the only rules here.

Our premiere comes from one of the three bands of renowned Melburnian saxophonist, Josh Kelly. JK Group’s Nutha One begins with Kamaal-Williams-esque synth stabs and Josh’s effects- drenched saxophone ringing in the background over snappily syncopated drums. The sax backs off only to coax out a keys solo and strings that, combined, could fittingly soundtrack a summer night stroll down a lively street. The smooth sonic walk turns sharply but purposely left, however, into something more like a run, as a house beat and sax take us to the track’s sudden and dramatic end.

It’s a fun listen, and one worth bookmarking for its December 13 release. Other artists to feature on the record are On-Ly, Antiphon, Foshe and Big Chief.
