We know next to nothing about this band, other than they're from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. You might even have guessed that from the distorted thumb pianos which are highly redolent of Kinshasa's most famous recent export, Konono No.1 - but Mbongwana Star (Mbongwana means "change", apparently) are a very different proposition. There's some very strange dubwise production, courtesy of Parisian and sometime Tony Allen collaborator Doctor L, some eerie postpunk-sounding guitar work, and an altogether unique vibe. They're coming to Europe in April and May and there'll be an album on World Circuit around then too. We will be paying close attention.

A: Alèmayèhu Eshèté - Telantena Zaré

The second time Eshete - aka the Ethiopian James Brown aka Abyssinian Elvis - has appeared in the series to date. This time in jazzier form. Upbeat piano, guitar and distinctive vocals accompanied by tough but subtle drums.

Originally released on 7” on Amha Records AE 780 in 1974. Needless to say, it’s nigh on impossible to find.



B: Girma Bèyènè - Ene Negn bay manesh

Reminiscent of the great works of Mulatu, ‘Ene Negn bay manesh’ is a beautifully deep groover, featuring Beyene’s vocal - unusual for him; he usually recorded instrumentals - subtle guitar, organ and horn lines.

Originally released, once again, on Ethipion label Amha Records AE 210, in 1969.

Girma Beyene - Ene Negn Bay Manesh

The chant was one of pain and desperation as he stood amidst the village of shanty huts. This was a place which he had called home for so long but now as he stood staring at the burnt out town that surrounded him he had never felt a stronger sense of disconnect. His heart ached for his missing lover, she had vanished into the shadowy depths of the forest which surrounded the once peaceful town. He shouted into the night, calling her name, "Tabanka" he cried, again and again. 

Sofrito: Tropical Discotheque is a record label made up of Hugo Mendez, Frankie Francis, Lewis Heriz and friends. Based in London they release music of a wonderfully eclectic worldly origin which could be as far removed from the city streets in which they inhabit.  Alma Negra is based in Switzerland and has previously released music for Highlife and INI Movement. This one has tribal dancefloor written all over it.
