Law - What is Jungle? The Evolution Of Drum & Bass

DJ Zinc Feat. MC's Five Alive & Marshall - Warning Ultimate Breaks & Beats Volume 01

Collusion Records, owned by Swan-E and Ellis D* came to the vinyl market in 1994 along with a whole host of other popular labels. Although mainly supported on the DJ circuit by the labels owners the venture didn’t seem to take off quite as well as other labels providing similar output and stayed very much a borderline affair. Its most popular releases in terms of DJ support must have been ‘Yeah Come On’ by Realtime and ‘Lessons’ by Swan-E & Undercut. 

The production used a staple format of hip hop samples, jungle breaks and a slab of Amen chops – it worked quite well in places, the clever sampling in Desert Storm is a personal favourite of mine. In terms of label progression, Collusion Records demonstrates a clear time line in its releases. If you were to play each one in order you can see where the changes in production techniques pop up. Sadly I don’t own 01 – 05, something I should really pick up on Discogs.

Swan-E produced a DJ mix for Dream Magazine (a similar production to Eternity) in 1997 which featured a few tunes from Collusion Records. ‘The Alarm’ was the sign off track and always had me wondering at the time why I had never heard this on any other DJs sets during the year. It was a similar story for most of these tunes featured in my mix, most were good if not great tunes but didn’t seem to pick up the support from the headline DJs. 

Both Swan-E and Ellis D were resident DJs to a certain degree at United Dance, held at Stevenage Arts & Leisure center back in the mid to late 90’s – if you were a keen supporter of the label then this is where you would hear any forthcoming releases. 

The last big push for Collusion Records was in 1999 when a 4 piece vinyl album hit record shops. A mixture of late 90’s jump up infused with tech-step beats bundled with a bit of early liquid is possibly a creative description of the album! Radio Warz featuring MC Fearless was the standout track, the rest are a bit of a mixed bag.

The final 12” from the label was released in 2001 by Parallel Mind, since then I have no idea what became of Collusion Records. 

Another great contribution to the jungle and drum & bass scene which, at the time, maybe went slightly unnoticed.

This mix was produced using only the original vinyl pressing, a pair of Technics and a DJM700 (just in case people wonder where the effects came from).

Revamped Jungle Classics Mix 2014 {Free Download}

Joker Records originated in the middle of the jungle explosion of the mid 90’s and continued to lead its own way of dance floor orientated beats for many years. Although the label didn’t reach the status of labels such as RAM, Urban Takeover and Philly Blunt it was still considered to be an incredibly important part of the early drum and bass scene.

Much of the output from the label received relatively low DJ support from the scene’s biggest players, although At The Time by The Riddler was championed by Nicky Blackmarket and Kenny Ken for a short period.

Many tracks signed to Joker Records used unlicensed samples from popular US Hip Hop records such as Vanilla Ice’s 'Ice Ice Baby' and Busta Rhymes’ 'Bus-A-Bus'. A sample from the main theme to Star Wars was cleverly reworked for the collaboration with Surburban Base Records under the title 'Star Warz'. This was a favourite intro tune for Ellis D for what seemed like an eternity in 1997.

This series of mixes aims to show how good the output from the Joker Records stable really was. In my opinion this label was an originator and pioneer of the early Jump Up scene.

175 Crew started 175 Records in 1997, here’s a brief history of the owners, the output and the end result.

I originally assumed that 175 Crew came from America however it turns out the 2 members were in fact Alistair Ash and Noel Simmonds (otherwise known as Nu Balance). The duo later went on to sign tracks to Trouble on Vinyl at the start of the millennium.

The mix contains every release from 175 Crew bar Funk Over Dose / Rippin Up Shows.

175 Crew should have put out more of this kind of style in my opinion; it was a combination of hip hop breaks, vocal samples and jump up basslines that made their style a winner. Admittedly the biggest track was Volume 1 from their own label which was a firm favourite by the likes of Kenny Ken and Nicky Blackmarket, I think even Hyper D had a soft spot for the labels production.

Rewind to 1996 and I can image what ideas would have been going round the duo’s heads, it would an ideal time to set up a label like this and although the Jump Up market was busy, it certainly was splitting in direction by 1997 when the first release was sold commercially.

I’m not really sure why they didn’t put more tunes out on their self-titled label , the style of the production suited the era perfectly although 2 releases a year was a pretty poor show and with times changing dramatically in 1999 it was no surprise the label was canned. Looking back on this it would have been much more of a success if 175 Crew had followed in the direction of True Playaz who put out a whole heap of quality in both 1997 and 1998 using only a select number of producers. 175 Crew probably only needs 2 or 3 more producers to make the label more of success.

A remix of Volume 1 by Crystal Clear was later put out on Heavy Rotation in 2009 which received heavy criticism from the drum & bass community. This was probably a sign of the times though as many of the younger generation embraced the track, probably not having heard the original and seeing no relevance as to why people were moaning.

The Revolution Time "Mix Tape" - The Run Tingz Cru & Family (Spring 2013)

Solid Steel (28th June) It's a massive welcome this week to Congo Natty, a well respected and legendary figure in British music who had his first release as Rebel MC in 1988, the same year Solid Steel started. Chart success followed alongside Double Trouble, but he's probably most respected as one of the pioneers of Jungle. His music has always been a firm fixture on Solid Steel, evident in the 1991 Kiss recording we had back in January. Will Ashon from Big Dada talks to him about his extensive career, his new album 'Jungle Revolution' and we get to hear a few classic records that have influenced him over the years. That is followed by a 'Congo Natty live 95' recording that features Ragga Twins, Navigator, MC Dett and DJ SL.
