I'm So Scared

I had a girlfriend for a hot second in my sophomore year of college. But she was a free spirit and she floated in and out of my life like the wind. For a while I tried to hold onto her, but it was like trying to hold on to a puff of smoke. This was during a time when I had just enough money to pay my tuition and some of my bills, but not enough for luxuries like eating or going out. I didn’t even have a phone in my one-bedroom house in West Campus. When I wanted to call someone, I would have to walk to the corner to use the pay phone. It cost a dime back then, that is until there was a lawsuit brought by Ashley and Gravitts, who were former Bell Telephone employees. They accused Southwestern Bell of wrongful termination in a sexual misconduct case. When they won, it cost SWB almost $30 million, and by “coincidence,” shortly after that, the cost of a phone call jumped from one dime to two. I was not amused. In retrospect, I suppose I had some misplaced feelings about the whole affair. My bemusement at having to pay $0.20 to call someone who would not take my call might have really been my frustration with my former girlfriend.
