After incredible releases from PTU, Biogen and Deniro this year, the label closes out 2017 with another sinister debut EP from Roma Zuckerman​.

The 20th release from Nina Kraviz’s seminal трип imprint is an homage to some of the most uncompromising manifestations of electronic music imaginable. Tracing sub-cultures from the 90s to the present day, трип 20 interrogates the boundaries of tempo and form via hardcore, gabber, acid techno and ambient. A mix of unreleased material and essential gems, the ten-track compilation visits трип regulars, esoteric masters and relative newcomers on a voyage to the extremities of a global underground.

трип 20 continues the tradition of gatefold double EPs as a conceptual album. All of the tracks are selected around a particular story, a trip, and presented as a continuous sonic landscape. All of the tracks are structured in a way that they can be mixed one with another an endless amount of times making a continuous loop, a trip, that needs only end when the party stops. Kraviz works without release dates or deadlines, enabling her to achieve a certain sound bank to shape the story, unmasking the thoughts and unravelling like a dream.

A1. Biogen – Hexagraphic 

An essential track from one of Iceland’s true underground pioneers, ‘Hexagraphic’ uses frenzied percussion to map out angular geometric oddities. Rhythmic patterns drift in and out whilst an arppeggiated low end and abstract melody interact with each other at high speed. 

A2. PTU – Castor and Pollux 

Animated malfunctions and freeform effects take the lead on this marching workout from Russian duo PTU, first heard on their Boiler Room in Moscow last year and now ready to be unleashed. 

A3. DEKA – Pearl (Nikita Zabelin edit) 

Equal parts gabber and acid, Moscow based Nikita Zabelin’s edit of DEKA’s ‘Pearl’ takes no prisoners with a booming kick and relentless analogue lead. 

B1. Exos – Grasshunter 

Opening up the B side, prolific Icelandic producer Exos administers a dose of uncanny, groove driven 90s techno on this unapologetically minimal, strangely addictive roller. 

B2. Bjarki – 3-1 tap lush 

A distinctive highlight track from Nina’s sets over the past few months - mistuned bells and distressed vocals flurry around cold stabs on a disorienting journey from Icelandic shapeshifter Bjarki. 

C1. Marc Acardipane a.k.a. Pilldriver – Pitch Hiker 

Stripped back, unrelenting hardcore from a 90s legend using raw elements and cavernous acoustics to devastating effect. Marc Acardipane aka Pilldriver aka Mover epitomises the sound of a movement. 

C2. Shadowax – I want to be a stewardess 

Looping vocals welcome you on board for this unfurling trip of multiple guises. What starts as a bare-bone techno sketch evolves into a fucked up mass of breaks, jungle and hardcore from Shadowax, also known as Russian producer and live act Ishome.

As a sub project from the legendary Rephlex Records, Universal Indicator (aka Aphex Twin) released a series of mostly untitled acid techno with nothing but associated colours from the UI spectrum as reference points. On this merciless cut, reactive chemicals are placed inside a pressure cooker. 

D2. Roma Zuckerman – Zero 

Трип mainstay Roma Zuckerman takes an unexpected turn on this blissful ambient wandering. Cinematic soundscapes contrast natural beauty with computerised glitches, held together by warm, dubbed out synths. Nestled amongst a compilation full of force, ‘Zero’ takes us on a different kind of trip. 

D3. Nina Kraviz - Opa 

Closing off the compilation, Nina delivers an obscure beast of cross-rhythmic machine funk. Shifting rapidly in and out of tempo, ‘Opa’ won’t wait for you to catch up.

Hailing from the ancient Russian city of Tambov, on the banks of the Tsna River, the youngest member of the трип family Vladimir Dubyshkin emerges for a potent debut solo EP. cheerful pessimist is an engaging package of highly anticipated deep, swirling techno tracks that many will recognise from label head Nina Kraviz’s DJ sets.

Diving straight into the core of a peak time set, Vladimir unleashes five formidable doses of unrestrained energy. Swollen sub bass and thumping percussion forge an unmistakable sense of physicality, whilst spiralling, amelodic leads run circles around the listener.

трип presents an optimistic rebirth in their ongoing series of concept albums. happy new year! we wish you happiness! is the theme for this double 12’’ of carefully curated breakneck techno and IDM. The eight-track package is a fantastical celebration of the new - with three new artists joining трип and a fresh new visual outlook for the label - dropping early in the New Year.

Continuing their mission to explore the inhospitable extremities of electronic music, happy new year! we wish you happiness! offers an otherworldly selection of rare sounds and abnormal structures from artists both familiar and unknown.

Buttechno opens the album with a concise but disorienting measure of mutating acid for his first appearance on трип, followed by ‘u ludei est pravo!’, a distorted swirl of uncanny acoustics from label boss Nina Kraviz and Snazzy, aka Dan Snazzelle of Nina’s favourite New York module makers Snazzy FX.

трип regulars PTU grace the B-side with a sparse techno cut full of layered details and animated leads, whilst absolute newcomer Carlota fuses mind bending cross-rhythms and sonic oddities on ‘your destination’. Then for her second track, ‘noise psychosis’ follows malfunctioning computers as they scatter through an abandoned landscape. Closing off the C-side, the youngest addition to the трип family Vladimir Dubyshkin marches with intent on glitching stomper ‘soviet film’.

Buttechno’s second entry ‘dubstepping progression fast’ is a mass of high speed drums, groaning sonic inflections and unnerving distortions. For the closing, Marc Acardipane as The Mover returns to the label with ‘track 1’. Eerie, conceptual and demanding, it’s everything трип stands for.

трип 23 ushers in a new visual era for the label. In Russia, New Year is the most anticipated celebration, with lots of snow, joy and dreams. The intricate crystalline hexagonal snow-like drawings are actually detailed 60s soviet era architectural plans for a school that was never built. The drawings were shown to Nina by the creators grandson. The futuristic look of these “industrial snow flakes” are the perfect visual compliment to the musical theme of the album.

happy new year! we wish you happiness! opens a welcome portal into further specimens of atypical electronic music and its multiplicitous manifestations, strange and sparkling in the darkness, like a dusting of snow over the city on the eve of the New Year.

nina kraviz vs snazzy - u ludei est pravo!

For the second release on the Galaxiid imprint, a label of electronic music archeology and quality, we are transported to the strange sonic world of an elusive 90s pioneer. Solar X’s 1997 album X-Rated will be released for the first time on vinyl, as well as reissued digitally, with new artwork by the Japanese artist Keiichi Tanaami. Two worlds connecting sonically, visually and culturally.

Solar X enjoyed a burgeoning career in post-Perestroika Moscow making playful, low-tech electronica from Soviet analogue instruments, which he masterfully configured to forge animated compositions and dancefloor rarities. Fascinated by chaos and complexity, his music explores the ways in which our minds can be manipulated by structure - an endeavour quite plausibly linked to his other career as a lecturer and researcher of AI, information theory and cognitive science, his interest in which was in turn triggered by his young experiments in computer music.

Solar X gained international attention at a time when Russia was (quite unfairly) seen as a vacuum for electronic music, but was exploding in the period of piracy, poverty and freedom following the collapse of the USSR. Young Russians had benefited from the soviet education system and there was a strong DIY computer programming and music scene, fuelled by hackers, gear freaks and party animals. Viewed from today, the album is reborn at a time of further political and social strife, which many see as fuelling the huge creativity and radical thinking of modern Russia’s young creatives.

X-Rated treats tempo and form as fluid concepts, administering sudden changes to its sonic landscape with disorienting effect, underlain with a subtle dose of humour and experimentation. Downtempo trip-hop sits alongside frenetic IDM and blistering electro, all bound together by peculiar melodic inflections and lively distortions. Warm, trippy harmonies and robotic synths are offset with angular drums, shifting erratically through moods and genres with cunning intent. Much like his contemporaries from the era, it’s his ability to breathe life into a humble production setup that makes his music so compelling some twenty one years later. 

The track titles are from a book of call girl cards in London phone booths, that reached the artist in Moscow in 1995. "I liked the titles from these cards, which were self-promoting and offering pleasure (e.g. "Mistress awaits you"). So, I thought since my tracks also offered some kind of pleasure, they might as well advertise this through their titles.” 

Label head Nina Kraviz was introduced to the work of the 83 year old sensei Keiichi Tanaami by Ukawa Naoshiro, founder of Dommune in Tokyo, one of the brightest figureheads for the arts in Japan, responsible for the graphic design of the cover. In September 2017 Nina played for the opening of Tanaami-san’s first exhibition in Moscow at Gary Tatintsian Gallery. Nina performed a live sound palette, to accompany the looping 7 minute animation, of experimental music from the Soviet Union, Russian pioneers of electronic music like Species Of Fishes and SolarX, Soviet-time pioneer Lev Termen, Kuryochin, avant-guard rock mixed with some Stockhausen and just pure abstract sounds, as well as treasured artists like Biogen.

Tanaami‘s illustrative work has strong sexual elements, so out of the five art pieces Nina selected and commissioned for Galaxiid, the first fits perfectly for ‘X-rated’. The vertical line of text on the left is the traditional form for Japanese covers of foreign releases. The cover, together with the accompanying poster and sticker, are printed in Japan to ensure the highest print quality and purity of the colours.

C2 Spanking for Pleasure

Alina Izolenta and Kamil Ea, the duo more formally known as PTU, present their debut album Am I Who I Am on трип.

The origins of PTU can be traced back to the early 00s, which found the duo spending their formative years experimenting with analog synths and sharing music onto each other’s hard drives. The physicality of this approach went on to have an immeasurable effect on their aesthetic, which bears an unmistakable live feel - rich with improvisation and surprises. 

A relatively sparse discography might mislead you from the fact that they have over a decade of experience delving into the strangest depths of analog hardware and jamming on obscure synths. A brief 2016 appearance on the трип concept album When I was 14 was followed by the emergence of ‘A Broken Clock Is Right Twice A Day’ - a stand out track on Nina Kraviz’ fabric 91 mix - which went on to become the title track for their highly acclaimed 2017 debut EP. Now, the duo present their singular, uncategorisable take on electronic music across a full length album.

Assimilating references to techno and IDM, but placing them in far less familiar structures, PTU’s productions breathe life into precise rhythmic patterns with equal doses of energy, experimentation and humour. Their music (just about) files under techno, but their approach to composition rejects genre boundaries of any kind, opting instead for a free-form exploration of the weird and wonderful.

Across twelve tracks, they cut and chop their way through frenetic marching drums and spiralling acid leads, awakening an army of malfunctioning robots as they go. Whilst Am I Who I Am boasts a vast spectrum of bizarre ideas - often introduced at high velocity - each one is executed with a skillful dose of restraint, summoning energy from microscopically detailed arrangements. From the angular maximalism of ‘Castor & Pollux’ to the eerie polyrhythms of ‘After Cities’ and the relentless hammer drills of ‘Sirocco’, PTU find life in the most extraordinary of places.

Following on from a series of stand-out appearances on трип, Am I Who I Am is a thrilling voyage into techno’s strangest sector.

Alina Izolenta and Kamil Ea, the duo more formally known as PTU, present their debut album Am I Who I Am on трип. They've been producing together since the early 2000s, utilizing obscure synths and avant-garde arrangements to give their tracks a live feel from the studio. As a result of this long-standing collaboration and friendship, they've created a tone that touches on a wide-birth of genres and sentiments for a sound undeniably their own.

This release off the record, 'Which Word is the Coldest', brings an acid-gabber techno stagger to the floor, reminiscent of an android army on the brink of oblivion, but the dance battle rages on. With a steady 4/4 and sultry, affirmative "Uh-Huh" vox samples woven throughout, this latest cut emphasizes that this bread shall be gotten tonight.
