It is very easy for each discipline/area to become so absorbed in their own field of knowledge that they don’t realise that working together in tangential fields will broaden and facilitate knowledge development. As you said, using sharp elbows and being annoying to ensure that people are informed of what SLT’s can bring to the table is necessary so that we can advocate for those with communication difficulties and ensure that these new technologies are desirable, usable and meaningful in real environments and not just laboratory. What is the role of Artificial Intelligence in Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC)?

In this, the third of our conversations around AI in speech and language therapy, we look at AI as a tool for people who have aphasia - a language disorder that affects a person's ability to speak and understand. Caitlin Longman, Accessibility Lead at the Stroke Association tells us about her work with people with aphasia and we hear from some of them about how they are using AI and also what are their concerns. Dr Abi Roper, an academic speech and language therapist and self-confessed 'techy' tells us about her research into AI to support aphasia.

RCSLT news December 2025

In this podcast we chat with Loretta Gasparini about the research she led on finding a robust predictor tool for persistent language disorders. The aim of this research is to  identify young children who are likely to have persisting language difficulties, so that we can recruit them into research, build a strong evidence base and ultimately support them to thrive.
