King Alfreds Cakes

King Alfred's Cakes is the final track and second single from R.dyer's upcoming album 'Little Victories.' 

The title refers to a coal-like fungus that pilgrims once used as firelighters; just one of many unusual objects to feature in the dense and magical narrative of the song. Told from the perspective of an antique desk, the song touches on folkloric ritual, colonial history and Billy bookcases, as the desk tries to remember if it ever was a tree. The stripped back arrangement of delicate harp and intimate vocals foregrounds the poetry and wit of Dyer’s lyrics, and the final refrain, as Dyer is joined by other voices, is guaranteed to bring a tear to your eye. Featuring the voices of Jon Griffin (Sairie), Melanie Pegge, Iain Paxon (Hamilton Yarns), Michelle Steele (October Club) and Adam Kane (Sad Funeral). 

ABOUT R.DYER
R.dyer (they/them) is a multi-instrumentalist and experimental song-writer based in Brighton, UK. Using anything from found sounds, tin-can phones, synth, musical saw, saxophone, harp, optical theremins
and home-made instruments Dyer creates intricate looped performances which move from baroque-pop to mesmerising
soundscapes via acapella folk songs and stories about dogs in trainers. Their live shows combine the charming chaos
of Thomas Truax with the musical virtuosity of Sarah Angliss, one of many artists that Dyer has supported, along with
such names as Ana da Silva &amp; PHEW!, Alabaster dePlume, Haiku Salut and Richard Dawson. They were awarded an
Emergent Commission by Drake music in 2021, responding to the theme of ‘risk’ by writing a song about board games.
This year they secured funding from Help Musicians UK to make this album. Other achievements include performing an
entire set as an ice cream, which they’d happily do hundreds and thousands of times again.

Featuring a collection of songs written over the last 10 years Little Victories is an album that marks and
celebrates moments in time, each song a dense narrative woven together with found sounds, lockdown field recordings,
snatches of speech and delicate vocals. From the avant-pop of the opening track Little Creatures, recalling the
rawness of early Arcade Fire, to the stunning folk-fragility of stand-out track King Alfred’s Cakes, it celebrates the
stories of the small and minute, giving voices to canaries and desks, with a wry and intelligent humour. Hinging on the
sound-bites of friends and audience members who recount their own little victories about pants, plants, and washing up,
it is a unique world of deep humanity, laughter, tenderness and journeys, a network of little things making a beautiful
whole.

Modern Life Live At Pipeline Audio

R.Dyer uses loop pedal, musical saw, saxophone, noseflute, found sounds, homemade instruments and household objects to combine baroque pop songs with improvised performance. Influences include: Owen Pallett, The Books, Shooby Taylor, The Hidden Cameras, musique concrete, Jonathan Richman and Harpo Marx.
